Many popular beverages not only quench thirst but also contain numerous antioxidants and nutrients that help prevent disease and aging.

1. Green tea

According to a Japanese study, people who drink more than three cups of green tea a day live longer. White and green teas contain huge amounts of the antioxidant EGCG, which helps reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease, Alzheimer's disease, and many types of cancer. The antioxidant catechin in green tea also protects the eyes from glaucoma.

Another study also found that older adults who drank a lot of green tea reduced their risk of premature death from heart disease by up to 76%, and their risk of colorectal cancer by 31%.

Compared to those who drink less than one cup of tea per day, those who drink more than seven cups of tea reduce their risk of cardiovascular disease by 76%, and women in particular reduce their risk by as much as 82%.

2. Coffee

Coffee is rich in antioxidants and phytonutrients, and one study found that drinking about three cups of coffee a day may help prevent Alzheimer's disease.

Other studies have shown that people aged 65-88 with mild cognitive impairment who have high levels of caffeine in their blood do not develop full-blown Alzheimer's disease within 2-4 years afterward.

3. Alcohol

Several studies have found that red wine contains polyphenols that may help stimulate genes that slow down cellular aging. A moderate amount of red wine per day, about two glasses, may help prevent many age-related diseases such as heart disease, Alzheimer's, diabetes, obesity, tooth decay, and some types of cancer.

Researchers have also found that grape seed extract and red wine slow the growth of bacteria that cause gum disease in the mouth. Wine may also protect the skin and reduce precancerous lesions. Resveratrol helps improve function in the elderly and prevents strokes.

4. Beer

Drinking beer in moderation may be beneficial for bones. One study showed that commercially available beers often contain silicon, which helps strengthen bones.

Silicon affects bone mineral density in humans, and silicon supplementation helps increase bone density in women. Moderation in drinking is crucial, as drinking more than two glasses of beer a day increases the risk of fractures.

Silicon also helps the body reduce the absorption of aluminum, which negatively impacts brain tissue. Beer is very good for people with arthritis; women who drink a little beer every few weeks over a long period reduce their risk of rheumatoid arthritis by 31%.

Beer also reduces the risk of kidney stones. One study showed that people who drank about two glasses of beer a day reduced their risk of kidney stones by 21%. Beer helps the body retain water and slows the release of calcium from the bones, resulting in fewer stones forming in the kidneys.

5. Beetroot juice

Beetroot is rich in nitrates, which improve blood circulation to the brain, especially the frontal lobe, which is associated with dementia. The nitrates in beetroot are natural, good for cardiovascular health, and help blood flow better. Beetroot also helps lower blood pressure, increase stamina, and prevent inflammation.
