Sony hasn't been a box office powerhouse in recent years. But they have reason to be hopeful in 2017 thanks to films like "Spider-Man: Homecoming," "The Dark Tower," and "Jumanji."

Resident Evil: The Final Chapter (February 10):After 15 years, the Resident Evil film franchise is preparing to conclude. In the final installment, heroine Alice (Milla Jovovich) returns to Raccoon City to try and stop and destroy the Umbrella Corporation before a zombie pandemic wipes out the few remaining humans. Claire Redfield (Ali Larter) and Albert Wesker (Shawn Roberts) are two of the few characters from the original comics who get a chance to appear in The Final Chapter.

Smurfs: The Lost Village (April 7):Sony has decided to reboot the Smurf franchise on the big screen with a 3D animated film unrelated to the previous live-action and animation-infused series. The story centers on Smurfette (Demi Lovato), who stumbles upon a mysterious map and enlists Brainy (Danny Pudi), Clumsy (Jack McBrayer), and Hefty (Joe Manganiello) for an adventure, unaware of the traps Gargamel (Rainn Wilson) has set for her.

Spider-Man: Homecoming (7/7):After The Amazing Spider-Man 2 (2014) failed to achieve the expected success, Sony decided to share the Spider-Man image rights with Marvel Studios and reboot the franchise with young star Tom Holland. The result was Spider-Man's impressive debut in Captain America: Civil War (2016). In his solo film, Homecoming, with the help of Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.), the teenage Peter Parker gradually becomes more confident and ready to confront the villain Vulture (Michael Keaton).

The Dark Tower (July 28)This fantasy film, directed by Nikolaj Arcel, is based on Stephen King's popular series of novels, with events taking place immediately after the original literary works. It tells the story of the lone gunman Roland Deschain (Idris Elba) and his battle against the evil sorcerer Walter Padick (Matthew McConaughey) in the Mid-World. Following the film's release, the producers planned a television series in 2018 to retell the events before The Dark Tower.

The Emoji Movie (4/8):The 3D animated film, directed by Rony Leondis, is based on the emojis commonly used in everyday chat applications. The Emoji Movie features voice acting by stars TJ Miller, James Corden, Patrick Stewart, Ilana Glazer, and others.
