Having won three grants from the National Research Foundation and the US Department of Energy for collaborative research projects on renewable energy, Vu Thanh Long was specially appointed as a lecturer and researcher at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (USA) 1.5 years earlier than the regulations.

TS Vũ Thành Long hiện là giảng viên và nhà nghiên cứu khoa học về lĩnh vực năng lượng mới tại MIT – Viện khoa học kỹ thuật hàng đầu thế giới.
Dr. Vu Thanh Long is currently a lecturer and scientific researcher in the field of new energy at MIT - the world's leading science and technology institute.

“Pathbreaking” research on solar energy

Over 30 years old, Dr. Vu Thanh Long has achieved success in his scientific research career in the United States. The young man from Nam Sach, Hai Duong is currently teaching and researching at the US's No. 1 Digital Technology Institute - Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Dr. Thanh Long's research focuses on the field of renewable energy. Before coming to the United States, Mr. Long spent time studying for his PhD in the lion island nation of Singapore.

Graduating from the Automatic Control major at Hanoi University of Science and Technology, the young man from Hai Duong wrote a letter asking to do research with Professor Shuzhi Sam Ge, a world-leading professor at the National University of Singapore (NUS).

Thanks to his three-time National Student Mathematics First Prize, Jackie Chan was fortunate to be noticed by the professor and supported to win the NGS scholarship from NUS, which was the best doctoral research scholarship in Singapore at that time.

After graduating with a doctorate, Jackie Chan set a goal to go to the US to do research and dreamed of going to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), the center of science and technology in the US and the world, to study and work.

His dream turned into action, he wrote to get acquainted and was accepted by Professor Konstantin Turitsyn at MIT to do postdoctoral research. This was the most effective research period of the Vietnamese young man, with many works that he was satisfied with. Dr. Long has won research grants from the National Research Foundation and the US Department of Energy 3 times for collaborative projects on renewable energy.

Thanks to those results, after 1.5 years, Mr. Long was promoted by MIT (about 1.5 years earlier than other postdocs at MIT) to be a researcher and also a lecturer at MIT, specializing in new energy.

TS. Long cũng là Chủ tịch đương nhiệm Hội điều khiển của Hiệp hội kỹ thuật thế giới (IEEE Control Systems Society) tại khu vực Boston, Mỹ.
Dr. Long is also the current President of the IEEE Control Systems Society in the Boston area, USA.

“Currently, renewable energy sources (from wind, solar...) are increasingly being introduced into the power system to reduce environmental pollution caused by traditional power sources (coal, nuclear...).

However, renewable energy sources such as wind and solar are constantly fluctuating and unstable, making it difficult to meet consumer demand and can cause widespread power shortages or power outages.

Therefore, I study the stability of the entire large power system when integrating renewable energy sources. For example, I answer the question: What percentage of renewable energy can be integrated into each system? If there is a risk of system instability, what should we do? ", Dr. Thanh Long shared.

Research at MIT is often groundbreaking and has a great impact. The Vietnamese guy is proposing a new research direction to maintain the stability of the power system by changing the system structure. Currently, this project has been accepted by the US Department of Energy (IDEAS program) as a concept paper because of its groundbreaking idea.

Proud of Vietnamese students at MIT

Talking about young Vietnamese people at MIT, Dr. Thanh Long expressed his pride and joy because they are not only good at studying but also active and demonstrate good leadership skills in an international environment.

“In the class I taught at MIT, I met Vietnamese students. They were all outstanding young people in the Vietnamese student/international student community. Some of them had won many gold/silver medals at international Olympics.

They are very good and often top the class in tests, in addition to showing good integration and leadership skills. I learn a lot from them, and I really hope that these young people will be the future of Vietnam,” Long confided.

Opening international conference on new energy in the homeland

Having become famous in the US, the young PhD dreams of using his expertise to contribute to the renewable energy industry in his homeland. Because Thanh Long realizes that Vietnam has the advantage of being one of the tropical countries, with a lot of sunlight, a coastline of over 3,000km with a large source of ocean wave energy, and abundant wind in many regions. These are favorable conditions for developing renewable energy.

“However, it is necessary to study what percentage of renewable energy is reasonable to develop, both economically compared to immediate investment and in terms of long-term impact on the stability of the power system,” said Dr. Thanh Long.

That is also one of the reasons why he directly participated in organizing the International Conference on New Energy in Vietnam - IEEE ICSET 2016 ( http://icset-ieee.org/2016/ ) as the program Chairman.

Dr. Long happily said that he was lucky to invite "free of charge" the world's leading professors in energy, such as: Professor PR Kumar (University Distinguished Professor of Texas A&M University, Academician of the US National Academy of Engineering and Senior Academician of the World Academy of Sciences); Professor Hsiao-Dong Chiang (Cornell University, senior member of the World Engineering Association); Professor Longya Xu (Ohio University, senior member of the World Engineering Association)... These leading professors will give in-depth speeches, present research and offer new visions and directions for the renewable energy sector in Vietnam.

The young scientist truly hopes that the conference will bring interesting initiatives, at the same time contribute to promoting the image of Vietnam internationally, and be a bridge to promote and facilitate long-term cooperation between Vietnamese universities and research institutes with famous scientists in the world.

Giving advice to young people about the path to realizing their passion, the 8X scientist confided: "I believe that if you just dream big and work hard for that dream, nothing can stop you from achieving your dream.

I think I am in a process of swimming upstream, in which I continuously set myself bigger and bigger goals and dreams and at the same time overcome my own limitations to achieve those goals and dreams. Then dream again…”.
