FIFA rejects FAM's appeal, AFC says it is awaiting CAS ruling; Malaysia could face a 0-3 forfeit loss, including their win against Vietnam in the upcoming 2027 Asian Cup qualifiers.

After the World Football Federation (FIFA) rejected the appeal of the Football Association of Malaysia (FAM) regarding the use of naturalized players, the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) stated that it could not intervene yet and would only act when the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) issued its final ruling. If the CAS upholds FIFA's decision, Malaysia faces the risk of a 0-3 forfeit loss in matches involving the players, including their victory against Vietnam in the 2027 Asian Cup qualifiers, which could alter the standings in Group F.

AFC's stance: awaiting the CAS ruling.

AFC Secretary General Windsor John stated that the AFC will not take any action before the legal process at CAS is complete. He said: “Currently, the AFC cannot do anything or interfere with FIFA’s rejection of FAM’s appeal. Any further action can only be taken after FAM takes the case to CAS – a process that could take several months to complete.”

This means that all scenarios regarding penalties or adjustments to the results of the matches involved are temporarily frozen until a final decision is made.

Legal timeframes: 10 days and 21 days

According to the regulations, FAM has 10 days to request a full written ruling from FIFA after receiving official notification. From the time of receiving this document, FAM has 21 days to file an appeal with CAS.

Given the aforementioned timeframe, the earliest the case can be brought before CAS is early December. In the meantime, the AFC maintains the status quo and closely monitors FAM's legal actions.

The focus of the case: the validity of naturalized players.

The case stems from allegations that Malaysia used a group of naturalized players whose credentials FIFA concluded were falsified. The potential legal consequences are enormous: if the CAS upholds FIFA's ruling, Malaysia could face a 0-3 forfeit loss in every match these players participate in.

The list of affected matches, based on current developments, includes the victory against Vietnam in the 2027 Asian Cup qualifiers. This is a crucial point that could disrupt both the tactical calculations and the rankings in the group.

Impact on Group F of the 2027 Asian Cup Qualifiers

In actual competition, a 0-3 forfeit decision not only directly affects the score but also impacts the goal difference – a factor that often determines whether a team advances or is eliminated. In Group F, any adjustments from the CAS (if any) could change the course of the competition.

However, at this point, all scenarios are merely hypothetical. The AFC emphasizes that it will respect the final ruling from CAS and will only then consider further steps in accordance with proper procedures.

What's next for FAM and the stakeholders?

Procedurally, FAM needs to complete the request for a written ruling from FIFA within 10 days, then prepare its appeal to the CAS within the following 21 days. While awaiting CAS processing and review – a process that can take several months – the parties involved will have to maintain a waiting status, with no official changes to the result or ranking.

The AFC's statement clarifies the dispute framework: the resolution mechanism lies with the CAS, and once the ruling is issued, the AFC will be the body to implement it within its jurisdiction. Until then, all professional scenarios – including the risk of Malaysia being handed a 0-3 defeat and its impact on the match against Vietnam – remain dependent on the final legal ruling.
