According to the indictment, on the evening of November 20, 2015, while out, Nhi was given a drug pill by two Laotians. Afterward, Nhi returned home. Around 11 PM, while watching television, Nhi stood up, kicked and broke a light bulb, and then cursed at her older brother, Xeo Van Loi. Seeing Nhi's unusual behavior, Loi ran to find help.
Meanwhile, Nhi heard the cries of baby Xeo Van Khinh - the son of Mr. Loi (only 1 year and 3 months old) - so she pushed open the door, snatched the baby from her sister-in-law's arms, and slammed him against a pillar. After committing the crime, Nhi fled to the mountains. At around 2 PM on November 21, 2015, Xeo Van Nhi was arrested by the Ky Son District Police.
The conclusion of the Central Institute of Forensic Psychiatry indicates that prior to committing the crime, the defendant Xeo Van Nhi did not have a mental illness. While committing the crime, the defendant suffered from a psychotic disorder due to the use of hallucinogenic substances. The defendant lost the ability to perceive and control his behavior.
At the trial, Xeo Van Nhi sincerely confessed to his crime. The legal representative of the victim also submitted a petition requesting a reduced sentence for the defendant and not demanding civil compensation.
After considering the aggravating and mitigating circumstances, the court sentenced Xeo Van Nhi to life imprisonment.
