India establishes maintenance center for C-390 Millennium transport aircraft.
The collaboration between Embraer and Mahindra aims to localize C-390 aircraft maintenance capabilities, with the goal of becoming a technical service hub for the South Asian region.
Brazilian company Embraer and Indian conglomerate Mahindra have officially announced plans to establish a maintenance and repair center for the C-390 Millennium aircraft in India. This is a significant step towards strengthening the logistical and technical capabilities of this military transport aircraft in the South Asian market.
Localization and regional support strategy
The decision to establish this maintenance center is part of a localization strategy in the Indian Air Force's medium transport aircraft procurement package. This not only helps ensure the combat readiness of the national fleet but also reduces reliance on foreign technical facilities.
The center is expected to provide basic to advanced maintenance services, including structural component inspection, component repair, and maintenance of complex avionics systems. Notably, this facility is being considered to become a regional service center, serving other countries operating the C-390 aircraft.
Combat capabilities of the C-390 Millennium
The C-390 Millennium is currently a modern military transport aircraft chosen by many countries such as Brazil, Portugal, the Netherlands, Austria, South Korea, and the Czech Republic. With a cargo capacity of up to 26 tons, this aircraft is designed for multi-mission operations: from troop transport and parachute drops to medical evacuation, search and rescue, and firefighting.
One of the C-390's technical strengths is its ability to operate flexibly on temporary or poorly prepared runways. Additionally, the aircraft can be converted into an aerial refueling aircraft, providing valuable support for extended air operations.
The link between Embraer and the Indian Air Force
Embraer has a long history of presence in India, with approximately 50 aircraft of various types currently in operation. Notably, the ERJ145 jet platform forms the basis of the Indian military's Netra long-range surveillance radar system. Additionally, the Legacy 600 series is also used by the Indian Air Force and Border Patrol for transporting high-ranking officials.
