India successfully tests phase two of its ballistic missile defense (BMD) system.
India's Defence Research and Development Organization (DRDO) successfully intercepted a long-range missile with a range of 5,000 km, establishing its position among the leading missile defense powers.
India has just set a significant milestone in its military modernization program with the successful completion of three consecutive tests of its ballistic missile defense (BMD) system. The tests took place in less than 48 hours, marking a new step forward for New Delhi in building a multi-layered air defense network to protect its territory.

A breakthrough with the second-phase BMD system.
According to an announcement from the Indian Ministry of Defence, the tests were conducted by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) on June 10th and 11th. This marked the first successful operation of the Phase-II ballistic missile defense system (BMD Phase-II), accurately intercepting simulated long-range ballistic missile targets.
The new system utilizes two types of specialized interceptor missiles capable of destroying intermediate-range ballistic missiles (IRBMs) with a range of 2,000 km to 5,000 km. Notably, this technology allows for the interception of targets both inside and outside the atmosphere, creating a flexible layer of protection against threats from space.
Enhancing strategic deterrence capabilities and multi-layered defense.
In addition to the Phase-II BMD system, DRDO has also successfully tested a new medium-range air defense system, further enhancing its multi-layered defense architecture. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh assessed this success as placing India among the few countries in the world that possess the capability to defend against long-range ballistic missile attacks.
Military analysts believe that New Delhi's increased missile defense capabilities are taking place against a backdrop of an increasingly complex regional security environment. India is pursuing a dual strategy: modernizing its strategic deterrence forces while simultaneously enhancing its proactive defense capabilities against new generations of ballistic missiles in the region.
DRDO officials said that completing the complex series of tests in a short time demonstrates the country's advanced defense technology research and development capabilities. The second phase of the BMD system is expected to be officially deployed to the armed forces soon after the completion of the final technical evaluation steps.
