Murder after a late-night drinking session.
The defendant and the victim were friends. During a drinking session, Tuan, angered by his friend's disruptive behavior, insults, and physical assault, took his friend's life with a knife.
On March 27, the People's Court of Nghe An province opened the first-instance trial of defendant Nguyen Anh Tuan (born in 1977), residing in Nghia Hung commune (Nghe An province), on charges of murder and illegal use of military weapons.
According to the indictment, on the afternoon of June 14, 2025, Nguyen Anh Tuan was drinking beer with some friends, including Truong Minh H. (born in 1981, residing in Quy Hop commune). Later, the group decided to go to Tuan's shed (built next to his to grow seedlings for sale) to continue drinking and singing karaoke.

During the drinking session, Mr. H. became upset and spoke loudly about the contractor not providing enough construction materials, causing delays in the project he was contracted to complete. Seeing that it was late and fearing his friend would get drunk, Tuan told everyone to go home and stop singing to avoid disturbing the neighbors.
When the others left, Tuan and Mr. H. continued drinking beer. At 10:30 PM, seeing that his friend was showing signs of drunkenness, cursing, and throwing things around in the shack, Tuan shouted, "You're drunk, stop it!" Mr. H. continued cursing, so Tuan grabbed him and pushed him out into the yard.
At this point, H. didn't leave but turned back and punched Tuan twice in the mouth. After being hit by his friend, Tuan pushed him away forcefully. H. then went outside and challenged, "Come out, I'll kill you."
Outraged by his friend's disruptive behavior, insults, and punches to the mouth and chest, Tuan went to get a knife and stabbed H. in the abdomen. After being stabbed, the victim ran out into the street and collapsed.
At that moment, Tuan ran out into the street to stop cars and ask for help getting the injured person to the hospital, but no cars stopped. By the time people took the victim to the hospital, Mr. H. had already passed away.
Before the witness stand, the defendant admitted to the crime and expressed remorse. The defendant stated that he and the victim were friends and had no prior conflicts. However, due to his anger over his friend's disruptive behavior, insults, and physical assault, he lost control of his actions.
The defendant admitted that both of them had been drinking alcohol that day. Recognizing the wrongfulness of his actions, the defendant apologized to the victim's family and, through his family's efforts, compensated the victim's family with 93 million VND.
After deliberation and consideration of aggravating and mitigating circumstances, the court sentenced the defendant Tuan to 9 years in prison for murder and 1 year in prison for illegal use of military weapons; a total sentence of 10 years in prison.
In the civil case, the court ordered the defendant to pay 294 million VND in compensation (after deducting 93 million VND) and provide monthly child support of 2 million VND for the two children until they reach 18 years of age.
