Just 30 grams of nuts a day could help you live longer, according to a new study.

The Daily Mail cites research from Harvard University (USA) showing that regularly eating nuts (about 30 grams) five or more days a week can help you live longer and have a lower mortality rate from cancer, heart disease, and respiratory diseases.

According to the study, for women, eating just two handfuls of nuts a week can extend lifespan to the same extent as jogging for four hours a week.

The study also showed that women at risk of heart disease who ate just one tablespoon of peanut butter each day for five or more days a week reduced their risk of heart disease by half compared to women who ate less.

For teenage girls, regular consumption of peanuts significantly reduces the risk of developing lumpy breasts, a sign that may indicate breast cancer.

One theory suggests that nuts boost metabolism, causing the body to burn more fat, thus helping those who eat them prevent many diseases.
