The meeting began in a warm and cordial atmosphere. "Thank you, Prime Minister, for taking the time for this meeting and for informing us about the preparations for the G20 Summit in Hamburg. And of course, within the framework of this visit, we will 'take advantage' of the opportunity to discuss bilateral relations between Russia and Germany in all areas. In addition, we will discuss 'hot spots' such as Ukraine, Syria, and several other regions," said President Vladimir Putin.
During the meeting, Merkel stated that Germany is hosting the G20 summit this year, and assessed that "Russia is a crucial partner of the G20."
German Chancellor Angela Merkel strongly agreed on the need to discuss pressing issues and develop contingency plans for the most urgent emergencies, particularly the situations in Ukraine, Syria, and Libya.
In addition, Merkel also suggested that the two sides discuss the current state and prospects of bilateral relations, including cooperation in energy, trade, economics, and culture.
Chancellor Merkel's visit to Sochi marks her first return to Russia since attending the celebrations marking the 70th anniversary of the end of World War II two years ago.
Russian experts believe this is an opportunity for Merkel to mend the conflicts between the two countries that have existed since Moscow announced the annexation of Crimea in March 2014. Germany has repeatedly imposed sanctions and economic embargoes on Russia.
