Anguissa's header saved the day, giving Napoli a 1-0 victory at Lecce.
VAR awarded Lecce a penalty in the 51st minute, but Camarda's save was denied by Vanja Milinkovic-Savic; in the 69th minute, Anguissa headed in Neres' free-kick to seal a 1-0 victory for Napoli.
Matchday 9 of Serie A at Stadio Via del Mare concluded with a 1-0 victory for Napoli: Andre-Frank Zambo Anguissa rose high to head home in the 69th minute after a tricky cross from David Neres. Earlier, the visitors had been on a tightrope when VAR ruled out Juan Jesus' handball in the 51st minute, awarding Lecce a penalty, but Vanja Milinkovic-Savic correctly saved Francesco Camarda's low shot.
VAR, missed penalty, and a decisive header.
In the 51st minute, from an aerial duel, the ball struck Juan Jesus' hand inside the penalty area. Referee Giuseppe Collu consulted VAR and then pointed to the penalty spot. Camarda fired a low shot towards the left corner, but Milinkovic-Savic didn't dive early, extending his arm to make the save. That was the turning point that helped Napoli hold firm.
Antonio Conte reacted quickly with a series of adjustments – increasing energy in the midfield and depth in attack: David Neres came on for the injured Noa Lang, before Scott McTominay, Leonardo Spinazzola, and Rasmus Hojlund appeared in succession. The effect was immediate in the 69th minute: Neres earned and took a free kick from the right, curling the ball into the 5.5-meter box; Anguissa chose the perfect spot, heading the ball skillfully beyond the reach of Wladimiro Falcone. 1-0 for Napoli.
Napoli imposed their dominance in midfield with pressing and the Gilmour-Anguissa-Elmas triangle.
From the start, Napoli maintained a high level of control and rhythmic pressing with a 4-3-3 formation. The Billy Gilmour – Anguissa – Eljif Elmas triangle helped the visitors dominate in the opponent's half, constantly creating scoring opportunities in the penalty area with quick passing down the flanks.
Border corridors and early opportunities
A series of chances arose regularly: in the 12th minute, Gilmour's volley narrowly missed the post; in the 16th minute, Giovanni Di Lorenzo headed the ball back for Anguissa to shoot, but it was blocked; in the 18th minute, Matteo Politano's shot deflected off a defender and went wide. From the 31st to the 35th minute, Mathias Olivera twice made runs down the left wing, crossing the ball across the goal and having a shot that was hooked off the line by Tiago Gabriel. Napoli's only problem in the first half was that their final passes weren't sharp enough to break the deadlock.
Lecce launched well-timed counter-attacks, but lacked the finishing touch.
Despite being outplayed, Lecce still knew how to wait for their moment. In the 45th minute, Lameck Banda sprinted down the left wing and crossed the ball to Camarda, who turned and volleyed diagonally into the net, the ball grazing the crossbar – a warning to Napoli not to be complacent. After conceding the goal, Marco Baroni boosted the attack with Balthazar Pierret, Konan N'Dri, and Youssef Maleh. They caused problems with high-pressure pressing and Antonio Gallo's runs down the flanks, but lacked a sharp finish in the penalty area. The saved penalty became the moment of greatest regret for the home team.
Late-game management: closing off space, locking down the tempo.
In the seven minutes of added time, Napoli retreated their defensive line just enough, tightening the space in front of the penalty area. On the right flank, Gilmour maintained a composed tempo, creating triangular passing combinations with Neres and Anguissa to waste time and push Lecce away from the danger zone. In the 90+4th minute, a cross from Neres caused Danilo Veiga to fumble and almost score an own goal – a final blow to the visitors' dominance until the end of the match.
Impact on Serie A standings
With a 1-0 victory at Via del Mare, Napoli reached 21 points after 9 matches and temporarily moved to the top of Serie A, while Roma still have a game in hand. Lecce are in 16th place with 6 points – and will still be bothered by the missed penalty.
