Britain allowed the US to use its air bases to attack targets in Iran.
London has approved the deployment of US troops from RAF Fairford and Diego Garcia bases to protect shipping lanes in the Strait of Hormuz from threats from Iran.
According to the BBC, the British government has officially authorized the US military to use its air bases to conduct attacks targeting Iranian objectives. This decision comes amid escalating tensions in the Strait of Hormuz, where international shipping is at risk of being blockaded.
Deployment from strategic bases
Specifically, US forces were granted access to two strategically important locations: Royal Air Force Fairford in Gloucestershire (UK) and Diego Garcia base in the Indian Ocean. This decision took effect immediately after the US and Israel launched a joint offensive against Iran on March 1st.
These military operations are defined as "defensive," focusing on neutralizing Iran's offensive capabilities targeting British personnel and allies in the region. However, London insists the UK's position is not to directly participate in these attacks. The British government emphasizes that the current priority remains de-escalation and a swift end to armed conflict.
Responses from stakeholders
London's decision has met with mixed reactions from the international community. US President Donald Trump called the move a belated response and expressed surprise that Britain did not act sooner to prevent the threats.
Conversely, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi issued strong warnings. He accused Prime Minister Keir Starmer of putting the British people in danger by aiding and abetting attacks. Tehran also asserted its right to self-defense against military actions from the US and its allies.
Tensions are escalating in the region.
The reality is that the risks to British bases are already present. In early March, Iran reportedly launched two missiles toward British military bases in Cyprus. Following that, a Shahed-136 unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) attacked Akrotiri air base, causing minor damage to airport infrastructure but with no casualties.
Currently, the Royal Air Force (RAF) maintains an active presence in Middle Eastern airspace to carry out defensive missions, including intercepting UAVs and cruise missiles. Notably, the UK has deployed four Eurofighter Typhoon fighter jets from Squadron 12 to Qatar and plans to add four more to fulfill its defense commitments in the region.
