He squandered the victory against Spain in injury time.

Leading by two goals until the 89th minute, a lapse in concentration allowed Gareth Southgate's men to equalize 2-2 in a friendly match at Wembley.

In the ninth minute, Adam Lallana opened the scoring for the home side from the penalty spot after goalkeeper Pepe Reina fouled Jamie Vardy inside the box. At the start of the second half, Vardy doubled England's lead with a diving header from a Jordan Henderson cross.

As the match neared its end, and it seemed England would secure a victory in front of 83,716 fans, Spain scored two goals in quick succession to dramatically equalize. First, Iago Aspas dribbled past defenders and curled a left-footed shot into the far corner in the 89th minute. Then, Isco scored the winning goal in the sixth minute of added time.

This was Gareth Southgate's final match as interim manager of the England national team, and it wasn't a happy ending. Previously, the English Football Association (FA) had agreed to let the 46-year-old lead the "Three Lions" until the end of 2016 before deciding on a long-term plan.

Southgate replaced Sam Allardyce as England manager amidst turmoil over his predecessor's scandal. In his first match in charge, England beat Malta 2-0. This was followed by a 0-0 draw with Slovenia and a 3-0 victory over Scotland, both in the 2018 World Cup qualifiers. Before the friendly match against Spain, some experts predicted a win would earn Southgate a long-term contract. Everything seemed to be going smoothly for the former England U21 coach until just one minute remained in regular time.

In England's first goal conceded, former Liverpool striker Iago Aspas made expensive center-back John Stones look foolish with a series of quick footwork before unleashing a skillful finish. In the second goal, despite Isco's excellent control after a pass from Daniel Carvajal, England wouldn't have conceded if goalkeeper Tom Heaton hadn't made a clumsy mistake. Heaton allowed Isco to nutmeg him when the midfielder had lost his balance and the ball was almost out of bounds.

In this match, Jamie Vardy scored a goal and won a penalty which Lallana converted to open the scoring. It's also worth noting that the Liverpool midfielder provided the intelligent pass that gave Vardy a one-on-one opportunity with Reina. However, the Leicester striker left a less than impressive impression with a tackle that went straight to Cesar Azpilicueta's ankle.

Lallana played well before being forced off in the 27th minute due to injury. This will be a major loss for Liverpool during a difficult period of the upcoming season. Lallana was the best player in England's 3-0 victory over Scotland and scored the only goal in their 1-0 win against Slovakia. It's clear that the midfielder is gradually increasing his influence on the national team.

In this match, besides the two goals, England had many dangerous attacks but failed to capitalize on them to score more goals. As for Spain, they only truly dominated in the final minutes of the match. However, the inexperience of their opponents helped Julen Lopetegui's team avoid defeat.
