Experienced scientists at the Southern Research Institute are developing body models that could be used to evaluate vaccines and treatments to prevent the spread of the Zika virus.
"The Southern Institute has many highly specialized researchers who can support the global scientific community in finding ways to stop the spread of this pandemic," said Dr. Jonathan Rayner, Director of the Infectious Diseases Department at the Southern Institute.
In early 2016, the World Health Organization (WHO) declared the spread of the Zika virus to be an emergency requiring coordinated global efforts. The Southern Research Institute could support the WHO by leveraging its experimental development results.
The Southern Research Institute has discovered and developed seven of the world's leading anti-cancer drugs. Some of these drugs are currently being used by experts as effective treatments in the fight against childhood cancer.
