The British Brakestop project is developing three long-range missile prototypes for Ukraine that do not use American components, aiming to ensure autonomy and optimize mass production costs.

The British Ministry of Defence has just unveiled three new long-range strike missile prototypes designed specifically for Ukraine. A key feature of these weapons is the complete elimination of US-made components, allowing London and Kyiv full autonomy in determining operational targets without requiring approval from Washington.

The Brakestop Project: Asserting Technological Sovereignty

The project is calledBrakestopLaunched in November 2024, the deployment of long-range missiles such as ATACMS (US) and Storm Shadow (UK) faces numerous legal obstacles. Because it contains US-patented components and data, the deployment of Storm Shadow has previously been subject to frequent adjustments under the US International Arms Export Regulations (ITAR).

By building systems without American components, the UK aims to ensure maximum sovereign control over military capabilities transferred to Ukraine. Successful tests in early 2026 at the Hebrides test range (Scotland) show the project is on schedule, with plans to deliver at least one missile prototype by the end of 2026.

Technical analysis of three new missile models.

Three companies were selected by the UK Ministry of Defence after a screening process from 27 units: MBDA UK, MGI Engineering, and Rotron Aerospace. Each unit pursues a distinct technological approach to optimize combat capabilities:

Not only the UK, but also Ukrainian defense companies like Firepoint are pushing forward with their FP-2 and FP-5 unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) lines, which are not subject to ITAR regulations, aiming for greater autonomy in long-term military operations without being dependent on policy changes from Washington.
