French Interior Minister Bernard Cazeneuve last week called on London to help refugee children currently residing in a camp near Calais reunite with their families in the UK.

Later, British Home Secretary Amber Rudd said that the children could be transferred immediately if Paris provided all the necessary information.

According to the BBC, the UK could accept more than 300 refugee children as part of a partnership with French authorities. However, Minister Rudd later estimated the number to be around 100.

British authorities will focus on children who already have a legal right to be reunited with their families in the UK, media reports indicate.

Since 2015, Calais has become a large migrant camp. It is also known for its poor living conditions.

Thousands of migrants from the Middle East and North Africa are currently housed in this squalid camp. The camp is located not far from the Channel Tunnel, through which refugees attempt to cross in the hope of reaching the UK.

According to French authorities, the remaining part of the camp will be closed in October, after most of it was dismantled in March of this year.
