Apple officially manufactures 25% of its global iPhone production in India to reduce its dependence on China.
With an annual production of 55 million devices, India currently supplies a quarter of the world's total iPhone output, helping Apple optimize its supply chain and avoid tariff risks.
Apple has officially reached a significant milestone by manufacturing 25% of its global iPhone production in India. This is a strategic move to diversify its supply chain and reduce its dependence on the Chinese market amidst complex geopolitical situations and constantly changing tariff policies.
The 25% milestone and the shift in the production map.
According to the latest report from Bloomberg, Apple has fulfilled JPMorgan's 2022 forecast to shift a quarter of its manufacturing operations to India. Specifically, over the past year, approximately 55 million iPhones were shipped from factories in the country, accounting for 25% of the total 220-230 million units produced worldwide.
Notably, the iPhone 17 models were manufactured entirely in India before their official launch last September. CEO Tim Cook confirmed that the majority of demand in the US market is now being met by products sourced from India rather than China as before.

Geopolitical pressures and diversification efforts
This significant shift is occurring against a backdrop of frequently changing tariff rules between the United States and China, creating considerable uncertainty for traditional supply chains. Expanding in India helps Apple mitigate the risks from harsh trade policies and increase its proactive approach to manufacturing.
However, this process also faces certain political challenges. At the Doha business summit in May, President Donald Trump directly warned Tim Cook against further expanding iPhone production in India. Despite these pressures, Apple has persevered with its strategy of diversifying its manufacturing base to other countries to ensure long-term stability.
India is emerging as a strategic market.
Beyond its role as the new "world factory," India is becoming a key market for Apple. Data from Counterpoint shows that the company shipped 14 million devices there last year, a 9% increase year-on-year. Total iPhone sales in this market have exceeded $9 billion.
| Manufacturing & Business Index | Statistical value |
|---|---|
| iPhone production in India | 55 million units |
| global production share | 25% |
| Revenue in the Indian market | Over $9 billion |
| Shipment volume growth | 9% |
To solidify its position, Apple opened its sixth retail store in India last month. Currently, the company is also in negotiations to launch its Apple Pay payment service in the country later this year, aiming to complete its service ecosystem in the South Asian market.
