Apple recommends that iPhone users update to iOS 26.4 immediately.

Apple has not released full details about the vulnerabilities patched in iOS 26.4, in order to allow users time to update before hackers can exploit the technical information.

According to Apple's support documentation, the iOS 26.4 update addresses a number of security issues, most notably about half a dozen vulnerabilities related to WebKit – the core foundation of the Safari browser. One of these is vulnerability CVE-2026-2887, which could be exploited to carry out web attacks if users access pre-designed malicious websites.

In addition, the CVE-2026-20643 vulnerability in WebKit, which allowed malicious web content to bypass web browser protection mechanisms, was also patched. Apple had previously addressed this issue in the iOS 26.3.1 (a) quick security patch released on March 17 as part of its immediate security update mechanism.

Beyond just the browser, iOS 26.4 also fixes four critical vulnerabilities in the operating system kernel. These are particularly dangerous flaws, as they could allow attackers to gain complete control of the device.

According to Adam Boynton, Senior Director of Enterprise Strategy at the US technology company Jamf, vulnerabilities like CVE-2026-20698 and CVE-2026-20687 can cause systems to crash or corrupt kernel memory, thereby facilitating privilege escalation.

He warned that, if exploited, these vulnerabilities could pave the way for hackers to gain complete control of users' iPhones. Therefore, early updates are key to minimizing the risk.

From a more cautious perspective, Javvad Malik, Chief Information Officer (CISO) at cybersecurity firm KnowBe4 (USA), believes the level of risk depends on the individual user and their usage environment. However, he still recommends that users update to iOS 26.4 as soon as possible to ensure safety.

Beyond security, iOS 26.4 also brings numerous performance and user experience improvements. Several annoying bugs associated with fast typing have been fixed. Many comments on the Reddit community indicate a significant improvement in overall performance.

Users have reported smoother swipe gestures, a more stable keyboard, and a display interface free from overlapping errors. Some even say their devices have been "revived" after the update. However, some users still report new bugs, such as window display issues or minor glitches in Safari.

Alongside iOS 26.4, Apple also released a series of other updates to its ecosystem, including macOS Tahoe 26.4, macOS Sequoia 15.7.5, and macOS Sonoma 14.8.5 for Macs.

Other devices also received corresponding patches, such as tvOS 26.4 for Apple TV, watchOS 26.4 for Apple Watch Series 6 and later, and visionOS 26.4 for Vision Pro mixed reality glasses. Additionally, Safari 26.4 and Xcode 26.4 were released for developers.

Another notable feature is that the Stolen Device Protection feature is now enabled by default on iOS 26.4. This feature enhances security in case your iPhone is lost or falls into the wrong hands.

According to Jake Moore, a cybersecurity expert at ESET (Slovakia), this mechanism uses familiar location recognition to limit significant changes when the device is in an unfamiliar location. This makes unauthorized access more difficult, thereby reducing the attractiveness of iPhones to criminals.

Users are also advised to enable the "Always request security deferral" option in the settings for an extra layer of protection.

Additionally, iOS 26.4 adds an age verification feature in the UK, requiring users to prove they are over 18 before accessing certain services. Apple states that data such as credit card information or identification will not be stored without the user's permission.

Although no vulnerabilities in iOS 26.4 have been reported to be exploited in the real world yet, given the large number of security flaws that have been patched, experts agree that users should update immediately.
