Arsenal's hopes of progressing were dashed after the first leg of the Champions League round of 16 when they lost.Bayern Munich annihilated their opponents at the Allianz Arena.
Arsenal, who have been eliminated in the knockout rounds in the last six seasons, twice by Bayern, could be said to have been lucky to have conceded only five goals considering Bayern's number of shots plus referee Milorad Mazic's missed penalty decisions.

This was a match where Arsene Wenger's team got off to a decent start. Although they fell behind early to a spectacular curling shot from Arjen Robben, a series of shots following a rebound from Alexis Sanchez's penalty helped Arsenal end the first half 1-1.

The disaster for Arsenal only began in the second half. First, they lost Laurent Koscielny to injury. Immediately afterwards, Bayern created a terrifying 10 minutes for the Koscielny-less defense, scoring three goals in quick succession, with a brace from Thiago Alcantara and a goal from Robert Lewandowski. Towards the end of the match, they added another goal thanks to substitute Thomas Mueller.
The crushing 1-5 defeat makes the task of the return leg at Emirates impossible and will put immense pressure on Wenger, who now only has the FA Cup to hope for to salvage a season that has already failed from this point on.
