Arsenal suffered a crushing defeat at Bayern, but history remains unchanged

February 16, 2017 06:41

Arsenal's hopes of progressing were dashed after the first leg of the Champions League round of 16 when they lostBayern Munich destroyed at Allianz Arena.

Arsenal, who have been eliminated in the knockout round in the last 6 seasons, twice by Bayern, can be said to be lucky to have only conceded 5 goals if you look at the number of shots fired by the "Gray Tigers" plus the decisions to ignore 11m penalties by referee Milorad Mazic.

This was a match that Arsene Wenger and his team had a good start. Although they fell behind early thanks to Arjen Robben's curling shot, consecutive shots after the ball bounced off Alexis Sanchez's penalty helped Arsenal end the first half with a score of 1-1.

The disaster for Arsenal only began in the second half. First, they lost Laurent Koscielny to injury. Immediately after that, Bayern created 10 minutes of horror for the Koscielny-less defense by scoring 3 goals in a row, with a double from Thiago Alcantara and 1 goal from Robert Lewandowski. They added another goal late in the game thanks to substitute Thomas Mueller.

The crushing 1-5 defeat makes the return leg at the Emirates impossible and will put a lot of pressure on Wenger, who can now only look to the FA Cup to salvage a season that has already failed from this point on.
