Asus ProArt PA32QCV: Is a 6K monitor a viable alternative to the Apple Pro Display XDR?

With its 6K resolution, 218 ppi pixel density, and Mac compatibility, the Asus ProArt PA32QCV delivers premium display quality, making it a worthwhile alternative to the Apple Pro Display XDR at a more reasonable price.

The Asus ProArt Display 6K PA32QCV is a noteworthy option in the professional display market for content creators, offering sharp 6K resolution. Priced at $1,399, it targets videographers and graphic designers using both Mac and Windows operating systems, providing a viable alternative to Apple's Pro Display XDR.

Professional design: 218 ppi pixel density and flexible ergonomics.

The ProArt PA32QCV features a silver bezel design, with overall dimensions of 24.3 x 28.1 x 9.5 inches and a weight of approximately 9.3 kg. The thin bezels optimize the display space on the 31.5-inch IPS panel. The compact yet sturdy rectangular stand connects to the body via a thick column with convenient cable management holes.

The most striking feature is the 6K resolution (6,016 x 3,384 pixels) on a 16:9 aspect ratio. This results in a pixel density of 218 ppi, comparable to Apple's Pro Display XDR. At typical viewing distances, individual pixels are virtually indistinguishable, delivering incredibly smooth and detailed images.

In terms of ergonomics, the monitor offers comprehensive adjustability: tilt (-5° to +23°), height adjustment (up to 5.1 inches), horizontal rotation (±30°), and notably, 90° vertical rotation. This is one of the largest monitors supporting vertical rotation, very useful for programming or design work in portrait orientation. The monitor is also compatible with the VESA 100x100mm mount.

Connectivity system: Thunderbolt 4 and a good balance.

The PA32QCV is equipped with modern connectivity ports, meeting the needs of professional users. The monitor has two Thunderbolt 4 ports: one upstream port supporting laptop charging with a power output of up to 96W and one downstream port allowing daisy-chaining with another monitor.

Additionally, the product features an HDMI 2.1 port, a DisplayPort 1.4, and a USB hub including one USB-C port and two USB-A ports. These ports are positioned facing downwards on the back, allowing for neater cable management. While not as diverse as the Dell UltraSharp 32 6K Monitor (U3224KB), the PA32QCV's port system is still superior to the minimalist design of the Apple Pro Display XDR and Studio Display.

6K display quality through real-world testing.

To evaluate performance, the screen's brightness, contrast, and color coverage were tested using specialized equipment.

Brightness and contrast:Asus claims a standard brightness of 400 nits, but actual measurements reached 557 nits. In HDR10 mode (VESA DisplayHDR 600 compliant), the measured brightness was 671 nits, exceeding the manufacturer's 600 nits. The contrast ratio was also very impressive, reaching 2,911:1, close to the advertised 3,000:1.

Color coverage:The PA32QCV demonstrates excellent color reproduction capabilities, covering almost all common color spaces: 99.9% sRGB and 99.9% DCI-P3. With the Adobe RGB color space, the monitor achieves 89.6%, a good result for print-related work.

Color accuracy:The Delta E (dE) index, which measures color deviation, was recorded at 2.5 before calibration. While slightly higher than stated (below 2), this is still a fairly good result. However, for absolute color accuracy in professional work, users should use dedicated color calibration equipment.

Experience and compatibility

Navigating the OSD (On-Screen Display) menu is done via a small joystick and five control buttons on the bottom right edge of the screen. The PA32QCV works seamlessly with both Windows and Apple computers. Asus has integrated two color modes specifically for Mac: Display P3 and M Model-P3 (simulating a MacBook screen), along with several other standard modes such as sRGB, DCI-P3, and Adobe RGB.

In practical use with both video and images, the colors are displayed vividly, and details in both bright and dark areas are well reproduced. Video playback is smooth, without tearing, thanks to adaptive synchronization technology.

Conclusion: A worthwhile 6K option for creators.

The Asus ProArt PA32QCV is a high-performance 6K monitor, particularly suitable for video and graphic creators who don't want to invest heavily in the Apple Pro Display XDR. While it doesn't reach the peak color accuracy and HDR brightness of Apple's product, the PA32QCV still offers excellent image quality, sharp resolution, and professional features at a much more accessible price.

Compared to its Dell counterpart, the PA32QCV has fewer ports but delivers better color accuracy in our tests. This is a reasonable balance, making it worthy of the Editor's Choice award for the professional 6K monitor segment.
