Clinton still has one last chance to become President of the United States.

Nearly 2.5 million Americans have signed a petition urging electors to vote for Clinton instead of Donald Trump on December 19th.

According to People, the petition appeared on Change.org on November 9th, after Donald Trump was elected President of the United States. Nearly 2.5 million Americans urged electors to “ignore state tradition” and vote for Clinton.

Although Trump surpassed the 270 electoral votes needed to become president, Clinton received more popular votes.

The Electoral College was established in 1804 and consists of 538 electors. Each state has a number of electors corresponding to the number of seats in Congress, which includes 435 seats in the House of Representatives and 100 seats in the Senate. The number of seats in Congress is proportional to the state's population. The remaining three electors are from Washington, D.C.

When Americans vote, they don't directly choose the president but elect an electoral college. This year, Trump won with 290 electoral votes, while Clinton only received 228.

Most states in the U.S. use a "winner-take-all" system when it comes to electoral votes. The winner in a state receives all of that state's electoral votes. However, there is no provision in the constitution or federal law prohibiting electors from voting for someone else.

Twenty-six states and Washington D.C. "bound" electors to vote for the candidate they pledged to support on December 19th. In some cases, there are "unfaithful electors" who vote against the popular vote results, and these individuals will face penalties.

Traditionally, after the popular vote, electors from each state will gather in Washington D.C. on December 19th to cast their votes.

Notably, despite the phenomenon of "faithless electors," the results of a US presidential election have never been altered in this way. Therefore, Clinton's chances of reversing the situation are very slim.

"Trump is unfit to be president," the petition reads. "His impulsiveness, bullying, dishonesty, history of sexual assault, and lack of experience make him a threat to the republic. Hillary Clinton won the popular vote and she should be president."
