The Stratus system, developed by Polish scientists, uses powerful electromagnetic pulses to instantly disable UAVs without causing an explosion, ensuring the safety of sensitive infrastructure.

Researchers at Gdańsk University of Technology in Poland have successfully developed the Stratus system – an electromagnetic defense solution capable of neutralizing unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) in seconds. This technology is expected to create a breakthrough in protecting critical infrastructure from airborne threats.

How the Stratus "invisible shield" works.

The Stratus system was developed by a research team from Gdańsk University of Technology. Instead of using physical interception methods such as artillery shells or missiles, this system operates by emitting high-intensity electromagnetic pulses (EMPs) to disrupt or destroy the electronic components of the drone.

Unlike traditional anti-UAV methods, Stratus uses short, high-intensity electromagnetic pulses capable of neutralizing targets almost instantaneously without causing a physical explosion. This advantage makes the system particularly suitable for deployment in sensitive areas where conventional interception methods pose significant safety risks.

Practical application in key areas

According to the research team, Stratus can be effectively deployed in locations such as:

  • Civilian and military airport.
  • Power plant and seaport.
  • Areas where events are held that attract large crowds.

At the core of the system is an advanced electromagnetic pulse generator. Scientists say the biggest technical challenge is controlling the high voltage and power density while ensuring absolute safety during operation. Stratus acts as an "invisible shield," neutralizing the UAV's flight capabilities electronically rather than directly destroying it with kinetic energy.

Development potential and security context

The Stratus project has received approximately 5 million euros in funding from the Polish National Research and Development Center to further refine and scale up its applications. Currently, the technology has been successfully tested in the laboratory under strict controlled conditions, but it has not yet been deployed on a large scale.

The development of Stratus comes as many European countries are reporting an increase in unidentified drones around military areas and energy facilities. The need for a rapid, secure, and low-altitude response defense system capable of suppressing threats is more urgent than ever for modern national security.
