Marine Le Pen and her race to overcome legal hurdles for the Élysée Palace.

French politics has just witnessed a historic turning point as the Paris Court of Appeals ruled to adjust the sentence against Marine Le Pen, the spiritual leader of the right-wing National Rally (RN) party. This decision not only temporarily removes the legal shackles that directly threatened the career of the 57-year-old politician, but also officially restarts the fierce race towards the Élysée Palace in 2027.

Courage fromfearand the journey of reshapingpartyright wing

Marine Le Pen was born on August 5, 1968, in Neuilly-sur-Seine.Île-de-FranceBorn into a political family, she is the youngest daughter of Jean-Marie Le Pen, the founder of the National Front (FN) – the predecessor of today's National Rally (RN). Her childhood was not as peaceful as that of her peers, but rather marked by the upheavals of the times. Her most vivid memory from her childhood at the age of eight is her miraculous survival after a horrific bombing targeting her father in 1976, an explosion that completely destroyed the staircase of their apartment where they were sleeping. Rising from fear, Marine Le Pen quickly cultivated an iron will and rare unwavering determination.

Having earned a Master of Laws degree in 1991 and a Diploma in Advanced Studies (DEA) in criminal law in 1992 from the prestigious Panthéon-Assas University, Marine Le Pen spent six years practicing as a freelance lawyer, specializing in defending impoverished defendants. Her sharp litigation skills and deep understanding of the justice system were crucial springboards for her later political career, leading her to officially join the legal department of the National Front party in 1998.

A major turning point came on January 16, 2011, when she won overwhelmingly against Bruno Gollnisch with 67.65% of the vote, succeeding her father as leader of the National Front party. Upon taking power, Marine Le Pen implemented a bold strategy, contrary to her father's views.Rebuilding the team while expelling controversial members accused of racism and anti-Semitism.He even accepted the harsh decision of expelling his own father from the party in 2015 following his controversial statements.

With her political acumen, she loosened many old positions, accepted abortion rights, supported the establishment of civil unions for same-sex couples, and gradually transformed the party from an isolated force into a mainstream political power with strong appeal to the French working class. As a result, she was consistently included in Time magazine's list of the 100 most influential people in the world in 2011 and 2015, and was ranked by Politico as the second most influential Member of Parliament in the European Parliament in 2016.

A spectacular legal comeback.

Despite a brilliant political career, Marine Le Pen's path to the Élysée Palace has never been easy. After three disappointing defeats in 2012, 2017, and 2022 against rivals François Hollande and Emmanuel Macron, she placed all her hopes on the 2027 race. However, a huge legal hurdle emerged in March 2025 when she was sentenced to a five-year ban from elections for allegedly misusing European Parliament funds to pay party aides in France for over a decade. This ruling was seen as a "death sentence" for the 57-year-old politician's political ambitions, forcing the RN party to consider a contingency plan to replace her with party leader Jordan Bardella.

However, the latest ruling on July 7, 2026, from the Paris Court of Appeal dramatically reversed the situation. The court upheld the charges related to public finances, but opened a major way out for her political future. With a three-year prison sentence, she received a two-year suspended sentence and only had to undergo one year of electronic house arrest. More importantly, the ban on running for office was reduced to 45 months, including 30 months of suspension. Since the ban has been in effect since the end of March 2025, the remaining time served will not affect the timing of the French presidential election in April 2027.

In explaining this landmark ruling, the Paris Court of Appeal emphasized a noteworthy argument: the court needed to consider the guarantee of voters' right to choose, which is seen as a core foundation of the democratic process.

A major variable on the French political chessboard.

Immediately after the ruling was announced, Marine Le Pen demonstrated the resilience of a determined female politician by reactivating her personal campaign website and appealing for public support.

Appearing in an interview on the national television channel TF1, she confidently declared that she would appeal to the Court of Cassation – the highest judicial body in France. According to the law, filing this appeal would temporarily suspend the enforcement of the sentence, including the request for electronic monitoring.

Marine Le Pen affirmed:"My point of viewThat's very clear. I wouldn't campaign if I had to wear an electronic monitoring device. When the orderThe appeal has been accepted, and the execution of the judgment will be temporarily suspended. Therefore, I will be entering the campaign as a completely independent candidate."

Le Pen's return to the race immediately changed the entire French political landscape. It also put an end to speculation about the role of the young RN party leader, Jordan Bardella. Now, Bardella remains a key ally, ceding the main stage to his more experienced predecessor to directly lead the campaign. This move represents a rare development in French politics, as a leading candidate enters the presidential race while still...according toDerail the appeals process.

Conversely, many opposition politicians have strongly criticized the practice, arguing that a candidate continuing to run after being convicted of misuse of public funds is a serious breach of integrity and could set controversial precedents.

Recent opinion polls show that Marine Le Pen's RN party remains firmly in the lead. Against a backdrop of deep social and economic instability in France, voters seem willing to set aside politicians' legal troubles in exchange for a commitment to radical change. The race for the Élysée Palace next year is a major test of public trust. Marine Le Pen, with her spectacular efforts to overcome legal hurdles, is closer than ever to her dream of entering the Élysée Palace.
