Bac Ninh: Visiting the 300-year-old Phuc Son Pagoda and the 8-ton monolithic jade Buddha statue.
Located atop Phoenix Mountain, Phuc Son Pagoda attracts visitors with its 13-story pagoda and a rare jade statue of Emperor Tran Nhan Tong.
Phuc Son Pagoda in Bac Ninh province is not only an ancient temple over 300 years old but also a prominent spiritual destination with rare jade statues and unique architecture. Located on Phuong Hoang Mountain in Tan Yen commune, the pagoda sits on land likened to a phoenix taking flight, exuding a serene beauty amidst the heritage land of Kinh Bac.

A historical landmark spanning over three centuries on Phoenix Mountain.
According to historical records, Phuc Son Pagoda was built around 1680, during the reign of King Le Trung Hung. Over more than 300 years, through many upheavals, the pagoda has not only served as a place of worship but has also been closely associated with the nation's resistance history.
During the resistance wars against the French and Americans, the pagoda served as a meeting place for guerrilla warfare planning, a medical station, and a safe haven for local soldiers and civilians. Despite numerous renovations due to damage from war and time, the pagoda still preserves a valuable collection of Buddhist artifacts, documents, and historical records with profound cultural significance.

A unique statue of the Buddha Emperor made of Canadian jade.
The most impressive highlight at Phuc Son Pagoda is the 13-story stupa, which enshrines a statue of Emperor Tran Nhan Tong made of precious jade. Venerable Thich Thanh Anh, the abbot of Phuc Son Pagoda, said that this statue was crafted from a single block of jade originating from the Cassiar Mountains (Canada).

The statue weighs over 8 tons and is of high purity. Before being officially enshrined in the stupa of Phuc Son Pagoda, the statue was escorted through many major pagodas such as Bai Dinh Pagoda, Yen Tu Pagoda, and Phat Tich Pagoda. The statue's form exudes serenity and wisdom in a meditative posture, reflecting a state of peaceful mind and body.

A modern yet ancient cultural and spiritual space.
Following a major renovation and inauguration at the end of 2023, Phuc Son Pagoda now boasts a spacious appearance while retaining its traditional Buddhist architecture. It serves not only as a place for local Buddhist activities but also as a venue for summer retreats and meaningful ethics classes for young people.

In particular, in May 2025, the temple held a ceremony to enshrine the relics of the Buddha, attracting thousands of Buddhists to pay their respects. At night, the temple grounds become enchanting under the lights, creating a magical atmosphere for the stupa and the main hall.
