| After two days of blood transfusion, baby Tran Thi Hang's jaundice has subsided, she is feeding well, and her vital signs are within normal limits. |
Previously, two days after a normal delivery at Cam Xuyen District General Hospital, baby Tran Thi Hang, daughter of mother Tran Thi Kim Oanh, developed severe jaundice and yellowing of the eyes. The child was transferred to Ha Tinh General Hospital for further treatment with a diagnosis of severe neonatal jaundice with increased bilirubin due to blood group incompatibility between mother and child.
After examination and biochemical tests, the Pediatrics Department held a consultation and reported to the hospital leadership that a blood transfusion was urgently needed for the child, otherwise it would cause irreversible brain damage.
However, Dr. Nguyen Viet Dong, Director of Ha Tinh Provincial General Hospital, stated that according to regulations, the blood used for transfusions in newborns must be fresh blood stored for less than 3 days, while all the hospital's blood reserves have been stored for over 4 days. Given this situation, the hospital leadership has appealed to members of the living blood bank to donate blood to save the children.
Upon receiving the information, Dr. Bui Hoang Duong, Deputy Head of the Pharmacy Department and Chairman of the Living Blood Bank Club of the Provincial General Hospital, and nurse Hoang Thi Ngoc Ha, a staff member of the Outpatient Department, donated 1 unit of O blood and 1 unit of AB blood to perform a blood transfusion to save the child's life.
To date, two days after the blood transfusion, the baby's jaundice has subsided, the baby is feeding well, and vital signs are within normal limits.
Holding her baby in her arms, Hang's mother emotionally expressed: "I was the one who gave birth to her the first time, but the doctors, with their professional skills and medical ethics, have given her a second life."
According to Dr. Nguyen Thi Lien, Deputy Head of the Pediatrics Department and the doctor who directly performed the blood transfusion on the child, Hang's life was saved thanks to the timely guidance of the Board of Directors, the efforts of the relevant departments, and especially the timely blood donation, which made the treatment process much smoother and yielded good results. She will be discharged from the hospital in a few days.
