MSc. Phan Thai Son, Head of the Emergency Department at the University of Medicine and Pharmacy Hospital in Ho Chi Minh City, said that chalk erasers are less irritating, while whiteboards written with markers are more harmful because they mainly contain the industrial chemical solvent acetone, a color-preserving chemical. This harmful effect is direct irritation to the throat area with symptoms that can be burning and blistering.
"The human mouth is easily irritated, especially for young children, the oral mucosa is very thin and therefore more easily irritated. If the blackboard cleaner contains these substances, when drunk, it will cause severe irritation inside the digestive tract, esophagus, stomach, burning the mouth cavity...", Dr. Son said.
