MSc. Phan Thai Son, Head of the Emergency Department at the University of Medicine and Pharmacy Hospital in Ho Chi Minh City, said that chalk rags are less irritating, while whiteboards written with markers are more harmful because they are mainly industrial chemical solvents such as acetone, a chemical that preserves the color. This harmful effect is direct irritation to the throat area, which can cause burning and blistering.
"The human mouth is easily irritated, especially for young children, the oral mucosa is very thin and therefore more easily irritated. If the blackboard juice contains these substances, when drunk, it will cause severe irritation inside the digestive tract, esophagus, stomach, burning the mouth cavity...", said Dr. Son.
