(Baonghean.vn) - Drunk, Nguyen Dinh Tri returned home, verbally abused his wife, and attacked a neighbor with a knife. A police officer, after receiving a report, approached the scene but was fatally stabbed by Tri.
On May 21st, the People's Court of Nghe An province held a first-instance trial to hear the case against defendant Nguyen Dinh Tri (born in 1969), residing in Hung Tien commune, Nam Dan district, for the crime of "murder".
According to the case file, at approximately 7 PM on October 10, 2023, Nguyen Dinh Tri, after drinking alcohol, returned home and began cursing andwife beatingTri's wife fled to her husband's younger brother's house for refuge, but her husband chased after her with a knife.
At that moment, Tri's younger brother's house had people drinking alcohol. Tri started a fight and slashed one person in the neck. Those present intervened, disarmed Tri, and took the victim to the commune's health station for first aid.
A short while later, Tri returned to his brother's house with a knife, but the family had locked the door. Tri then slashed at the front door, windows, and furniture, so his wife called the village head to report the incident to the police.
After receiving the notification, Mr. Hoang The Th. (born in 1969) - a part-time police officer in the hamlet - immediately went to the scene. At this time, Tri had already returned home and locked the gate, so Mr. Th. requested that the suspect come to the commune police station for questioning. However, Tri refused to comply and stood in the yard wielding a knife, slashing at the gate.
Given the situation, Mr. Th. called the Deputy Chief of Police of Hung Tien commune to request reinforcements at the scene. While Mr. Th. was standing and talking, Tri climbed over the fence, jumped out, and stabbed a police officer. The victim was taken to the hospital but died from a penetrating chest wound.
After stabbing the victim, Nguyen Dinh Tri climbed into his house and fell asleep. At 9:30 PM the same day, Tri was arrested by the police. During questioning, Tri could not clearly remember his crime and showed signs of mental disorder. Therefore, authorities conducted a psychiatric evaluation of Tri, concluding that before, during, and after committing the crime, Nguyen Dinh Tri suffered from mental and behavioral disorders due to alcohol use.
At the trial, the defendant admitted to the crime. The defendant stated that he was intoxicated and therefore unable to control his actions.
The court determined that the defendant's act of murder was brutal and therefore required severe punishment. However, several mitigating circumstances were also considered, such as honest confession, remorse, partial compensation from the family, the defendant's limited ability to control his actions, and the fact that his parents were revolutionary heroes.
After considering all aspects of the case, the panel of judges sentenced Nguyen Dinh Tri to 20 years in prison. Regarding the civil aspect, the court ordered the defendant to compensate the victim's representative with 180 million VND.
Regarding the act of slashing the neighbor's neck, because the injury was minor and the victim did not request prosecution, the authorities did not consider it.
