With 2 gold medals from cyclist Jennifer Valente and the women's basketball team, the US sports delegation equaled the number of gold medals with the Chinese sports delegation (40), but thanks to the superior number of silver medals (44 compared to 27) and bronze medals (42 compared to 24), the US finished the Games with the top of the overall medal standings. This is the 4th consecutive time the US has won first place in the overall medal standings. With 20 gold medals, Japan took third place in the overall standings. Following them were Australia (18), France (16), the Netherlands (15), and the United Kingdom (14).

Within Southeast Asia, the Philippines is leading with 2 gold medals and 2 bronze medals. Following them are Indonesia (2 gold medals, 1 bronze medal), Thailand (1 gold medal, 3 silver medals, 2 bronze medals), Malaysia (2 bronze medals), and Singapore (1 bronze medal). The Vietnamese sports delegation finished the Games without winning any medals.
