'Super expensive' bread costs over 2.2 million VND per loaf in Vietnam.
Tucked away in the Ton That Dam street market (District 1, Ho Chi Minh City), a shop is surprising many people by offering a special type of bread priced at nearly $100 per loaf.
Banh mi is a very familiar and affordable food for Vietnamese people, especially those in Saigon. The average price ranges from 10,000 to 30,000 VND depending on the type, meeting all the criteria of being delicious, nutritious, inexpensive, and convenient. But spending 100 USD, equivalent to over 2.2 million VND, on a single banh mi is not something everyone would easily agree to, and very few banh mi shops would dare to "risk" selling such an item. Yet, this super-expensive banh mi has just appeared in Ho Chi Minh City.
Nestled in a small corner, hidden behind the market on Ton That Dam Street, a restaurant has just introduced a type of sandwich priced at up to $100 USD per loaf. It immediately became one of the most expensive sandwiches in the world (according to the "Best Ever Food Review Show" on YouTube).
Explaining the exorbitant price, the restaurant manager said that while the bread itself is cheap, the filling is anything but. The filling of the $100 sandwich is a combination of foie gras and grilled pork ribs.

Each sandwich uses four pieces of foie gras, each weighing approximately 40 grams. The foie gras is pan-fried until the fat renders out, then the chef drizzles this rendered fat over the entire sandwich in the final step. Grilled pork ribs are the main ingredient. The ribs are vacuum-packed and cooked at a low temperature for six hours, resulting in very tender meat while retaining its original flavor.
Cilantro, basil, mint, sliced cucumber, and shredded carrots are placed on top to create a harmonious flavor profile. Contributing to the $100 price tag is the addition of caviar, along with complimentary fried sweet potatoes and champagne, depending on the number of customers.
Reportedly, one slice of this sandwich is quite large, enough for 2-3 people. To enjoy this special sandwich, customers must order it one day in advance, paying a 50% deposit or a $100 upfront fee.
"Although it's only been open for a month, we've received a steady stream of orders and very positive feedback. On average, we get an order every 2-3 days, mostly from overseas Vietnamese and foreign tourists," the restaurant manager revealed.
