US newspaper: Iran may attack Israel in the next few days
A potential Iranian attack on Israel would be in response to the assassination of the political leader of the Hamas movement.
According to Komsomolskaya Pravda, Axios newspaper said that Israeli intelligence warned that Iran could attack Israel in the next few days, believed to be related to the upcoming negotiations between Hamas and Israel on August 15.
According to information received, the attack may have been in response to the assassination of Hamas political leader Ismail Haniyeh.
Earlier, Iran's acting Foreign Minister Ali Bagheri Qani said that Israel would suffer heavy losses if Ismail Haniyeh was killed. He also stressed that Iran has significant capabilities to initiate military action if the situation requires it.
Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps Deputy Commander Ali Fadavi said they would soon carry out the Supreme Leader's "order to punish Israel severely."
General Ali Fadavi declared that the Axis of Resistance alliance in the Middle East will join forces to strengthen sanctions against Israel "more than ever before" and "aim for the end of the occupation force". He said Iran has a duty to avenge its blood "after the bitter events on its territory".
Observers say Iran's delay in retaliating for the assassination of Ismail Haniyeh may be related to the proposal to hold the next round of talks between Hamas and Israel on August 15. Mediators suggested the two sides discuss in Cairo or Doha, which Israel agreed to while Hamas is considering the proposal.
The US and Arab countries are racing against time to convince parties in the Middle East to react with restraint. The US has also sent more fighter jets and warships to the region to be ready to help Israel in case it is attacked.
