Located in the town of Reykjavik (Iceland), the Icelandic Phallological Museum is the museum that displays the world's largest collection of penises with about 280 specimens of mammals, including a real human specimen. This museum is a serious scientific research project of father and son Sigurður Hjartarson and Hjörtur Gísli Sigurðsson. Photo: Ren A. |

The penis museum began as a prank in 1974 when Sigurður, Hjörtur’s father, was given a dried bull penis. Some teachers who worked at a nearby whaling factory began giving Sigurður whale penises to continue the joke. From there, Sigurður came up with the idea of collecting the penises of mammals. The collection started slowly, with 13 penises from whales and land mammals collected in 1980. By 1997, the Hjörturs had 62 penises when the museum opened. Photo: Spot Cool Stuff. |

Owner Hjörtur shared that the museum was opened with the serious aim of removing prejudices about the penis and encouraging people to study this special organ in depth as a scientific field. 99% of local people have a positive attitude when visiting the penis museum. Photo: Gap Year. |

The lampshades are made from bull testicles. The specimens Mr. Hjörtur chooses to display must fit the theme of the museum. The penises are either soaked in formalin or dried and mounted on wooden panels. The artwork and furniture here are also designed to fit the theme of the museum, but are subtle enough not to offend visitors. Photo: The Gold Van. |

In 2011, the museum's collection received an important specimen from Pall Arason, an Icelandic man who had signed a document to donate his penis to the museum in 1996. Doctors fulfilled his wish when Arason passed away. Photo: Apetcher. |
