Barcelona falls out of the group of transfer giants: From a record-breaking billion euro transfer fee to 98th place in the world.

Under Hansi Flick, Barcelona ranked only 98th globally in terms of spending, behind even lower-division teams. The club was forced to rely on La Masia to maintain competitiveness.

Barcelona is facing a harsh reality as they are no longer able to spend lavishly in the transfer market. From a team that once dominated every summer transfer window, the Catalan giants have now fallen to 98th place in the world in terms of player spending, behind even smaller teams like Augsburg or even Pisa in Serie B.

The collapse of a spending empire

To understand the extent of Barcelona's decline, we need to look back at their financial golden age from 2015 to 2020. During this period, the Camp Nou club spent a staggering 965 million euros on transfers. The peak was the 2017/2018 season, when the club set a spending record of 388.1 million euros with blockbuster signings such as Ousmane Dembele (148 million euros) and Philippe Coutinho (135 million euros).

However, the legacy of the old regime has left a budget gap of up to 450 million euros after the post-COVID-19 audit. As a result, high-profile targets like Nico Williams or Luis Diaz have become unattainable. Instead of A-list stars, Sporting Director Deco now has to focus on cheaper deals or loan players like Marcus Rashford and Joao Cancelo.

Transfer statistics hit a historical low.

Under coach Hansi Flick, Barcelona's transfer budget is operating in a state of extreme frugality. Over the past two years, the German strategist has only received €88 million in reinforcements. This season, spending has reached only €27.5 million, a record low for a club of this stature.

Roony Bardghji was one of the inexpensive signings that Barca made (2.5 million euros).

The contrast becomes stark when compared to top rivals. In the Premier League, Liverpool leads the world with spending of €482 million in the 2025/2026 season. Even in La Liga, Real Madrid ranks 16th globally with €167.5 million, while Atletico Madrid is 9th with €229 million. Barcelona's 98th position places them below even Shakhtar Donetsk, a club currently facing immense difficulties due to conflict.

Betting on La Masia Academy

Financial constraints have forced Barcelona to shift their focus to utilizing their own resources. In their recent match against Atletico Madrid, the value of Barca's starting lineup was only €212.4 million, €24 million less than their opponent. The current squad is centered around young talents from the La Masia academy such as Lamine Yamal, Pau Cubarsi, Gavi, and Fermin Lopez.

Although President Joan Laporta remains optimistic about the club's competitiveness, the elimination in the Champions League quarter-finals has exposed a gap in squad depth. Future targets like Bastoni (Inter Milan) or Jon Martin (Real Sociedad) remain on paper, as final decisions still depend on the club's ability to balance its budget next summer.
