This is the second time in a short period that Christensen has been sidelined for an extended period, depriving Barcelona of an important option in defense.
In theory, the club could activate the “emergency injury” clause to register a new player with a salary up to 80% of Christensen's earnings. However, the management decided not to utilize this mechanism. According to sources from Catalonia, Sporting Director Deco confirmed that Barcelona will not participate in the transfer market.
The reasons given were not only financial but also professional. The sports department was not convinced by the available options and did not want to bring in "stopgap" signings.
Coach Hansi Flick faces pressure to rotate the squad.
The management's stance contradicts the wishes of coach Hansi Flick. The German strategist had previously stated that he would discuss the possibility of strengthening the squad with Deco. In fact, Flick had expressed concerns about squad depth early in the season, especially after Inigo Martinez's departure.
The core difference lies in the criteria. Deco is only willing to act if he finds a player of sufficient quality to be a starter immediately. Conversely, Coach Flick views the issue from a more practical perspective: the current squad is being pushed to its limits and lacks rotation options for a long season across multiple competitions.
With Christensen absent, Barcelona were left with only six true defenders: Pau Cubarsi, Eric Garcia, Ronald Araujo, Alejandro Balde, Gerard Martin, and Jules Kounde. This number is even more worrying considering Eric Garcia is often deployed in midfield.
Clearly, coach Hansi Flick is working under tight tactical constraints. Each new injury could lead to major disruptions. Despite this, Barcelona remains steadfast in its "don't buy just enough" strategy, placing faith in the existing squad rather than risking short-term signings. This decision places considerable pressure on Flick and the players, as their physical limits and consistency are being tested in every match.
