Two suspects arrested for hacking 1,000 Facebook accounts and stealing 10 billion VND.

On September 17th, the Criminal Police Department of Da Nang City Police, in coordination with the Quang Tri Provincial Police, arrested Cao Van Hieu (28 years old) and Mai Thanh Quoc (26 years old, both residing in Trieu Phong district, Quang Tri province) for investigation into the crime of fraud and appropriation of property.

According to initial investigations, to carry out the fraud, the suspects used hacking techniques to access the Facebook accounts of Vietnamese people living abroad. They then used these accounts to message their relatives in Vietnam, enticing them to contribute money for business ventures, and subsequently misappropriating the funds.

To evade law enforcement, the suspects used game accounts to launder money, avoiding the possibility of tracing the flow of stolen funds.

Police have determined that, from the beginning of 2024 until now, these individuals have hacked 1,000 Facebook accounts and stolen assets from more than 500 victims nationwide, totaling approximately 10 billion VND.

Following reports from victims, at approximately 0:00 on September 17th, task forces from the Criminal Police Department of Da Nang City Police, in coordination with the Quang Tri Provincial Police, unexpectedly raided the hideout of the fraud ring members in Trieu Phong district. They apprehended Cao Van Hieu and Mai Thanh Quoc, seizing numerous pieces of evidence.

To date, police have contacted four victims in Soc Trang, Kien Giang, Thua Thien Hue, and Da Nang, with a total amount of over 1 billion VND stolen.
