After more than 40 days of investigation since residents reported a serious deforestation incident at the Nam Giang border gate, this morning, the Criminal Investigation Agency of the Quang Nam Provincial Police announced the temporary detention of four suspects.

Additionally, three suspects who surrendered in Quang Binh province are being transported by Quang Nam police to Quang Nam for further investigation.

The identities of the seven individuals involved in this deforestation ring have not been released by the police as the investigation is still ongoing.

Authorities have also suspended four border guard officers and one leader of the border customs branch to facilitate the investigation.

Currently, the Quang Nam Provincial Police are also urging the remaining individuals involved in this deforestation ring to surrender soon in order to receive leniency from the law.

The individuals involved in the deforestation have been identified and reside in many provinces and cities, making the investigation and apprehension process very difficult.

Field work has now identified the coordinates of the deforestation area in the Nam Giang border region. 41 out of 60 felled Pơ Mu trees are located within the border area of Nam Giang district, while the remainder are in Dak Chung district (Sekong province, Laos).

On July 21, Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc issued a directive to the Ministry of Public Security, the Ministry of National Defense, and the People's Committee of Quang Nam province to investigate and clarify this serious case of deforestation.
