Despite the cold rain, farmers are planting ahead of schedule.
(Baonghean.vn) - Despite the cold, rainy weather and low temperatures, hundreds of farmers in the communes of Quynh Hong, Quynh Hau, Quynh Doi, and Quynh Ba in Quynh Luu district still went to the fields to sow and plant spring rice nearly 20 days ahead of the scheduled planting season.
According to the 2017 Spring crop production plan, Quynh Luu district will plant 7,550 hectares of spring rice. Based on this year's weather characteristics, with the late cold spell and the beginning of spring on February 4th, 2017 (corresponding to the 6th day of the first lunar month), 100% of the rice crops will be planted after the Lunar New Year.
However, due to the people's desire to complete their farming work before the 27th day of the 12th lunar month to have time for Tet shopping and leisurely spring excursions after Tet, farmers in communes such as Quynh Hong, Quynh Hau, Quynh Doi, and Quynh Ba are currently disregarding the seasonal schedule and proceeding with land preparation and rice planting for the spring crop.

| Despite warnings, people in Quynh Luu planted crops ahead of schedule. |
Previously, Quynh Luu district held a conference to implement the tasks for the 2017 Spring crop production and briefed the directors of agricultural service cooperatives and agricultural officials in 33 communes and towns on the seasonal planting schedule. Specifically: For the main spring rice crop, the seedling stage will be from January 10th to 20th, and the transplanting will take place from January 30th to February 10th, 2017. The late spring rice crop will be planted 10 days after the main crop.
Mr. Nguyen Anh Hung, Head of the Agricultural Extension Station in Quynh Luu District, said: Although there are still 20 days until the scheduled planting season, from January 8th to 10th, hundreds of households did not adhere to the planting schedule, sowing seedlings early and transplanting before the scheduled time. This is very disadvantageous because early-planted rice can die if it encounters prolonged severe cold weather, or it will flower prematurely, affecting the final yield.
In light of this situation, the Agricultural Extension Station advised the District People's Committee to direct cooperatives to educate farmers to strictly adhere to the planting schedule, immediately stop sowing and transplanting, and actively care for and protect spring rice seedlings from the cold.
