According to initial investigations, in early March, many localities in Song Ma district suddenly experienced numerous rumors of ghosts and superstitions, causing public anxiety and fear. During this time, due to the influence of these rumors, 20 students in 114 out of 470 villages in 11 out of 19 communes and towns of Song Ma district had to drop out of school, not daring to go to school because of fear. In many places, people also did not dare to go out at night.
During the investigation, the Song Ma District Police clarified that Pham and Quyen were the two young men behind the eerie rumors. Their modus operandi was to search for and use images and videos from horror movies and gruesome images of traffic accidents online, then edit, cut, and paste them together, adding commentary with frightening content heavily tinged with superstition.
They also propagated the idea of so-called "vampires" appearing to abduct people, causing widespread panic and fear.
At the police station, Pham and Quyen initially admitted to their actions.
