Authorities arrested two individuals for creating fake Facebook accounts to defraud people of 1.5 billion VND.

Previously, on March 27th, the Criminal Police Department of Thanh Hoa Provincial Police received a crime report from Ms. LTV (born in 1963, residing in Ha Trung town, Ha Trung district) regarding being defrauded of nearly 1.5 billion VND by an individual impersonating a relative who contacted her via Facebook.

This has been identified as a case of using cyberspace for fraudulent purposes.misappropriation of propertyThe Criminal Police Department has concentrated its forces and launched an investigation to clarify the matter.

Four days after receiving the tip, the Criminal Police Department arrested two suspects: Nguyen Thanh Dong (born in 1997) and Nguyen Cong Chanh Hung (born in 2004), both from Trieu Phong district, Quang Tri province.

During an emergency search of the suspects' residences, the police seized 4 mobile phones, 1 iPad, 1 desktop computer, and 235 million VND in cash.

At the police station, the suspects confessed that they had conspired to learn how to commit fraud by creating fake Facebook accounts of Vietnamese people living and working abroad. They then used these fake Facebook accounts to contact the victims' relatives, requesting them to transfer Vietnamese currency to exchange for foreign currency.

To carry out the scam, the perpetrators buy disposable phones and SIM cards, then contact victims to deceive them and request money transfers to bank accounts they provide. They contact Telegram groups involved in money laundering to obtain bank account details from the victims for transferring money.

Besides the scam targeting Ms. LTV, these individuals also committed another fraud against a victim in Dich Vong Hau ward, Cau Giay district, Hanoi, amounting to nearly 350 million VND.

Currently, the police are investigating and expanding the case.
