On August 6, 2012, Mr. Thai asked Thuan and Phan Van Chinh (born in 1978, residing in Hoa Thanh commune, Yen Thanh district) to go to Thiep's house to collect the debt. Because he did not know Thiep's house, when he arrived at Do Luong town, Thai asked Mr. Van in Yen Son commune, Do Luong district to go with him to show him the way.

At Mr. Thiep's house, Thai asked for the debt but Mr. Thiep kept refusing, saying he had not paid yet. Hearing that, Thai said: "If you don't pay, come downstairs and we'll solve it.”. Then Thai used his hand to grab Thiep's head and pulled him into the car, Thuan stood behind to help.

Thai drove the car and drove the group to a karaoke bar in Do Luong town, then locked Mr. Thiep in a room inside the bar. There, Thai threatened him and threw a glass cup at Mr. Thiep's head, injuring him and requiring him to be taken to the hospital for treatment.

Around September 2012, Thuan traveled to Russia and then escaped, staying there to work illegally. Some time later, Thuan fled to England to work illegally. On August 12, 2019, realizing that his actions were illegal, Thuan returned to Vietnam and surrendered to the Nghe An Provincial Police Department.

For the actions of Thai and Chinh, they were convicted by the People's Court of Nghe An province for the crime of "Illegal arrest and detention" in judgment No. 38/2014/HSST dated April 24, 2014.

At the end of the trial, the panel sentenced Thuan to 18 months of non-custodial reform.
