"We have really failed... We have to find out why we failed. However, there is no final result yet," Htay Oo said in an interview with Reuters.

Vote counting is still underway and official results have not been announced, but according to preliminary reports from across the country, Aung San Suu Kyi's opposition National League for Democracy (NLD) party is holding a large advantage.

Htay Oo said he was surprised by the defeat of the ruling USDP in the Hinthada constituency in the Ayeyawaddy region. “I didn’t think it would happen because we have solved many problems for the people in this area. But anyway, it is the people’s decision,” he said.

According to Xinhua News Agency, on November 9, Myanmar's National Assembly Chairman and House Speaker, Mr. Shwe Mann - a representative of the ruling Union Solidarity and Development Party (USDP) participating in the general election on November 8 also admitted defeat.
