After three years of living with an undetected congenital defect, a 3-year-old girl can now defecate normally like other children, thanks to a successful anal reconstruction surgery performed by doctors at Vinh General Hospital.

Baby NND (3 years old, Kim Lien commune) was brought to the hospital by his parents in a state of prolonged constipation, bloating and crying every time he went to the toilet. The family said that since birth, the baby had been defecating through a small hole near the anus, thinking that it was normal. Only when the baby grew up, ate well but defecated more and more difficultly, did the parents take the baby to the doctor.

Through examination and imaging, the doctors discovered: The baby did not have an anus in the correct anatomical position. Instead, there was a fistula through the skin - a type of low anal malformation. For three years, the baby had to "live with" a temporary path for excretion - just enough to survive, but also silently causing a lot of discomfort.

Anorectal plastic surgery is performed with high technical requirements, requiring absolute precision. The goal of the surgery is to restore the anatomical structure, returning the anus to the correct position within the sphincter to ensure normal bowel function, while preserving the mucosa to limit postoperative complications.

Thanks to the smooth coordination and solid expertise of the surgical team, the surgery went smoothly. Currently, the baby's health is stable, recovering well and can go about his normal activities.

Dr. Bui Danh Anh - Head of General Surgery Department 01 said: "Congenital anal malformations are not a rare disease. Some cases are missed because children can still defecate through the fistula, causing parents to be subjective. Therefore, parents need to observe carefully, especially when children are constipated, have difficulty pushing or cry every time they defecate."

Advice for parents:

  • Check the newborn's anus immediately after birth.
  • If the baby does not pass meconium in the first 24 hours, seek medical attention promptly.
  • When seeing children showing signs of prolonged constipation, stool passing through an unusually small hole or crying when defecating, take the child to a specialized medical facility for timely diagnosis and treatment.

According to Dr. Anh, thedevelop presently earlyMalformation is the decisive factor in treatment. If timely intervention is given, the child can develop completely normally without any sequelae./.
