Five-year-old boy undergoes surgery to restore his female gender.
The baby was born with male genitalia but had a uterus and ovaries, and underwent gender reassignment surgery at the Central Highlands Regional General Hospital.
A child in Hoa Dong commune, Krong Pak district (Dak Lak province), was born in 2014 with male genitalia, so the family named him a boy, cut his hair short, and dressed him in boys' clothes.
The family noticed unusual symptoms in the child's genitals and took him to the Central Highlands Regional General Hospital for examination on April 24th.
Doctors discovered the baby had a uterus, two fallopian tubes, and two ovaries, but its external genitalia included a penis and two scrotums, though there were no testicles. The urethral opening was located deep inside the urethra, below the penis, and there was no vagina. The baby was transferred to Tu Du Hospital in Ho Chi Minh City for testing, which confirmed it had a 23 XX chromosome pair, indicating female sex.

The child returned to the Central Highlands Regional General Hospital for endocrine treatment. On May 29th, doctors performed surgery to restore the child's female gender, reconstructing the clitoris and vagina. Currently, the child's health is stable, and all daily activities have returned to normal, just like a girl.
Vietnamese law currently allows individuals to redefine their gender in cases where their gender is affected by a congenital defect or is not accurately defined and requires medical intervention to clearly determine their gender. Individuals who have undergone gender reassignment have the right and obligation to register the change in their civil status according to the law on civil registration, and have personal rights consistent with their redefined gender as stipulated by law.
