5 year old boy has surgery to return to female gender
The baby was born with male genitals but has a uterus and ovaries. Doctors at the Central Highlands General Hospital performed gender reassignment surgery.
The child patient in Hoa Dong commune, Krong Pak district (Dak Lak), was born in 2014 with male genitalia, so his family gave him a boy's name, cut his hair short, and dressed him in men's clothes.
The family noticed that the baby had unusual symptoms in his genitals so they went to the Central Highlands General Hospital for examination on April 24.
The doctor discovered that the baby had a uterus, two fallopian tubes, two ovaries, but the external genitalia had a penis, two scrotums, but no testicles in the scrotum. The urethral opening in the eye under the penis was located deep inside, there was no vagina. The baby was transferred to Tu Du Hospital, Ho Chi Minh City, for testing, and it was determined that she had a pair of chromosomes 23 XX, which means she was female.

The patient returned to the Central Highlands General Hospital for endocrine treatment. On May 29, doctors performed surgery to restore the baby's female gender, reconstructing the clitoris and vagina. Currently, the baby's health is stable, all activities have returned to normal like a girl.
Vietnamese law currently allows individuals to have the right to re-determine their gender in cases where their gender is congenitally defective or not yet accurately formed and requires medical intervention to clearly determine their gender. Individuals who have undergone gender re-determining have the right and obligation to register for a change of household registration in accordance with the provisions of the law on household registration, and have personal rights consistent with the re-determined gender as prescribed.
