A 7-year-old boy was bitten multiple times in the face by his family's dog, causing half of his upper lip to be severed beyond repair.

Viet Duc Hospital said that in the past week, the hospital has continuously treated 2 cases of people bitten by domestic dogs, in serious condition.

The first patient was a 7-year-old boy (Chuong My, Hanoi) who was bitten many times on the face by his family dog (not vaccinated). Half of his upper lip was bitten off, measuring 2x2cm, close to his nose, and his lower lip was bitten deeply.

A boy bitten by a dog is at risk of leaving a large scar on his face.lip.

Notably, the severed lip was crushed and had many dog teeth marks on it, so there was no possibility of microsurgery to reattach the patient's lip, and this lip was not properly preserved.

Dr. Nguyen Thi Thu Hang, Department of Maxillofacial Surgery - Plastic Surgery - Aesthetics said that doctors cleaned the lesions, sutured the wounds on the face, and grafted a complex part of the upper lip.

The patient is now conscious, has no fever, and the wound is dry. The doctor has prescribed multiple plastic surgeries, but the prognosis is poor, greatly affecting future cosmetic function.

Dr. Hang recommends that in cases of partial amputation of a limb or lip, it is necessary to preserve it properly by placing the body part in a clean plastic bag + a little clean water, wrapping it tightly, then placing it in a bucket of ice water.

The remaining case of dog bite was an 88-year-old woman (Dong Anh, Hanoi). On her way home from buying flu medicine, she was pushed over by a neighbor's big dog, bitten on the arm, peeling off a long section of skin from her right arm and injuring the soft tissue of two fingers.

The old lady's dog-bitten arm has been cleaned and bandaged.

The patient's wound was then debrided. His condition is now stable and he can be discharged in 2-3 days.

Two weeks ago, Viet Duc Hospital also treated an 8-month-old girl (Hanoi) who was bitten by her family's mastiff, leading to shock and death. When the mother saw her child being bitten by the dog, she ran in to grab her child and was also bitten multiple times on the arm by the dog.

According to Decree 90 of the Government regulating administrative sanctions in the veterinary field and some other fields effective from July 19, 2017, in cases of not muzzling or leashing dogs in public places, the owner of the animal will be fined from 600,000 VND to 800,000 VND... However, in reality, many dog owners still ignore this regulation.
