Bitten by a rabid dog, mother dies, premature baby in critical condition
(Baonghean.vn) - News from Nghe An General Hospital said that one day after being hospitalized due to a rabies attack, patient Nguyen Thi Tin (32 years old), 32 weeks pregnant, died.
Patient Nguyen Thi Tin (Nghi Van, Nghi Loc) was admitted to the hospital on June 9 and treated at the Tropical Diseases Department with symptoms of rabies: fever, fatigue, drooling, inability to swallow saliva, fear of water, fear of wind, throat spasms, etc.
Through medical history, it was learned that 5 months ago, when she was 3 months pregnant, the patient was bitten by a dog, but had not been fully vaccinated against the disease. Determining that the patient was 32 weeks pregnant, with a high mortality rate, the obstetricians quickly performed an emergency cesarean section to deliver the baby. The 32-week-old baby boy, weighing 1600g, was born while the mother struggled on the emergency operating table with the onset of rabies.

“After birth, the baby boy did not cry, his muscle tone was weak, and he was premature. We had to perform intensive resuscitation, squeeze a balloon, and intubate him to support his breathing. Up to now, 3 days after birth, the baby is still in an incubator, continuing to be closely monitored in the Obstetrics Department with a poor prognosis,” said Dr. Tran Thi Ngan, Neonatal Unit, Obstetrics Department.
After a cesarean section to save her child, on June 10, patient Tin died.
Doctors of the Department of Tropical Diseases recommend: When bitten by a rabid or suspected rabid animal, the victim must immediately wash the wound with soapy water or concentrated salt water, rinse with clean water several times, and apply an antiseptic such as alcohol. The sooner the wound is treated locally, the more effective the antiseptic effect and prevention of rabies virus spread will be. After that, the victim must immediately go to a medical facility to get vaccinated. Absolutely do not delay vaccination or anti-rabies serum, because once rabies has occurred, the mortality rate is almost 100%, and no medicine can treat it. |
