(Baonghean.vn) - News from Nghe An General Hospital indicates that one day after being admitted due to rabies, patient Nguyen Thi Tin (32 years old), 32 weeks pregnant, passed away.

Patient Nguyen Thi Tin (Nghi Van, Nghi Loc) was admitted to the Tropical Diseases Department on June 9th with symptoms of rabies: fever, fatigue, excessive drooling, inability to swallow, fear of water, fear of wind, and pharyngeal spasms, etc.

Upon reviewing the patient's medical history, it was learned that five months prior, during her third month of pregnancy, she had been bitten by a dog but had not received the full course of rabies vaccination. Given that she was 32 weeks pregnant and the risk of death was high, the obstetricians quickly performed an emergency cesarean section. A 32-week-old baby boy, weighing 1600g, was born while his mother was struggling on the operating table with the onset of rabies.

“After birth, the baby boy didn't cry, had flaccid muscle tone, and was premature and weak. We had to perform intensive resuscitation, using a manual resuscitator and intubation to support his breathing. To date, three days after birth, he is still in the incubator, being closely monitored in the Obstetrics Department with a serious prognosis,” said Dr. Tran Thi Ngan, Neonatal Unit, Obstetrics Department.

Following a cesarean section performed to save his child, patient Tin passed away on June 10th.

Doctors specializing in Tropical Diseases advise: When bitten by a rabid or suspected rabid animal, the victim must immediately wash the wound with soap and water or a strong saline solution, rinse thoroughly with clean water several times, and apply an antiseptic such as alcohol. The sooner the wound is treated, the more effective the disinfection and prevention of rabies virus spread. Afterwards, the victim must immediately go to a medical facility for vaccination. Absolutely do not delay vaccination or administration of anti-rabies serum, because once rabies symptoms appear, the mortality rate is almost 100%, and there is no cure.
