Many people still think that plastic cutting boards are more convenient and cleaner than wooden ones. However, that's not true.

According to Allrecipes magazine, plastic cutting boards harbor more bacteria than other types of cutting boards. Even knowing the truth about what plastic cutting boards can do, you might not want to use one a second time.

With their lightweight nature, smooth surface, and ease of cleaning, many people mistakenly believe that plastic cutting boards are more hygienic than wooden ones. However, some recent studies show that plastic cutting boards harbor more bacteria, providing a breeding ground for them.

Research from the University of Wisconsin found that many bacteria, including salmonella (the culprit behind diarrhea), cannot survive on wooden cutting boards when left overnight. However, those bacteria thrive and multiply on a plastic cutting board.

Old, worn, chipped, or grooved cutting boards can be breeding grounds for germs. Therefore, if your kitchen cutting board is too old and has many knife marks on its surface, you should replace it with a new one.

Plastic cutting boards should only be used for cutting meat or foods that will be cooked at high temperatures. You should not use plastic cutting boards to cut raw or undercooked food, or vegetables and fruits that will be eaten immediately.

However, whether it's a plastic or wooden cutting board, you should clean it thoroughly with hot water and soap before use. You should dry it with a towel immediately after washing; do not use the cutting board while it is wet to prevent bacteria from multiplying.
