Dung's family lives in Nghi An commune, a suburban area of Vinh City. His parents are self-employed and couldn't provide much support for his studies. After finishing 9th grade, Nguyen Tien Dung took the entrance exams for the specialized mathematics program at both Phan Boi Chau High School for the Gifted and Vinh University High School for the Gifted. Passionate about mathematics, Dung chose Phan Boi Chau High School because he believed that "this is the best environment for me to develop."

For the first two years, in pursuit of his goal of joining the national mathematics competition team, Dung studied day and night. When he received the news that he had been eliminated, although disappointed, Dung did not allow himself to rest because the National High School Graduation Examination was very close. Not wanting to fail again, Dung threw himself into studying with the sole goal of attending Hanoi Medical University.

The "sweet reward" for those efforts was very high scores in the university entrance exams: Math 9.75, Chemistry 9.8, Biology 9.8, Physics 8.8. With these results, Nguyen Tien Dung became the top-scoring candidate nationwide in Group B.

Sharing his secret, Dung said: “To get high scores in exams, you need to stay calm in the exam room, try to solve the easy questions quickly and accurately before moving on to the difficult ones. If you can't answer a question, skip it immediately and move on to the next one. Then, if you have time, go back and finish the unfinished questions. For essay-based subjects, be careful not to take shortcuts or skip small, familiar steps that can easily cost you points.”

Dũng also shared: "Generally, the exam structure for high school subjects doesn't include overly difficult or tricky questions, but it does require a solid understanding of the textbook curriculum. Therefore, you shouldn't be overconfident during the exam, and you shouldn't focus solely on certain topics or neglect others."
