Dung's house is in Nghi An commune, a suburban area of Vinh City. His parents are only freelance workers so they cannot support him much in his studies. After finishing 9th grade, Nguyen Tien Dung took the entrance exam for specialized Math at both Phan Boi Chau High School for the Gifted and Vinh University High School for the Gifted. Passionate about Math, Dung chose Phan High School because he believes that "this is the best environment for him to develop".

In the first two years, in order to pursue the goal of joining the national math competition team, Dung studied day and night. When he received the news that he was eliminated, although disappointed, Dung did not allow himself to rest because at that time, the National High School Exam was very close. Not wanting to fail again, Dung threw himself into studying and his only goal was Hanoi Medical University.

The "sweet fruit" for those efforts is the very high scores in the university entrance exams: Math 9.75, Chemistry 9.8, Biology 9.8, Physics 8.8. With this result, Nguyen Tien Dung became the top candidate in the B group nationwide.

Sharing the secret: Dung said: “To get high scores in exams, you need to be calm in the exam room, try to solve the easy questions quickly and accurately, then move on to the difficult questions. If you can't do a question, skip it and move on to the next one. Then, when you have time, go back to complete the unfinished questions. For essay subjects, be careful not to take shortcuts or skip small, familiar steps that can easily cause you to lose points.”

Dung also shared: "Usually, the structure of the high school exam subjects does not have questions that are too difficult to challenge students, but requires solid knowledge in the textbook program. Therefore, when taking the exam, do not be subjective, do not memorize or study lopsidedly."
