Professor Nguyen Thien Nhan could not list all the names that were deeply ingrained in his memory when he spoke about Ho Chi Minh City at the Politburo's decision to assign him new duties this morning.

In the place he calls home, where he has lived for 23 years, the new Secretary of the Ho Chi Minh City Party Committee was moved as he recalled memories from his time as a student studying abroad, serving in the army, seeking employment in the city, becoming a teacher, then a Youth Union official, and finally working in the city government.

Those who were once leaders, or who are now key officials of the city, from their time as grassroots officials, all share common memories with him.

He mentioned familiar names like Le Van Nuoi, ​​Ba Dua, Anh Liem, Anh Khoa, Anh Tuyen, Chi Dung... with unforgettable memories of his youth.

"I am deeply moved. This is my second time returning to the city. The first time was in 1983, when I didn't know what to do and was serving in the army. For the next 23 years, the city has supported me and provided me with opportunities to work... I speak with a Northern accent, but the people of the city have welcomed and accepted me," he recounted.

Professor Nguyen Thien Nhan recounted his journey as a teacher, then as Deputy and Head of Department at Ho Chi Minh City University of Technology, to becoming an official of the City Youth Union, leader of the Department of Science and Technology, and then Vice Chairman of the City... The new Party Secretary of the City Committee called today, the day he received his new assignment, a very special day because it marked his return home.

"Having been entrusted with this task by the General Secretary, the President, the Chairman of the National Assembly, and the Prime Minister, today the Head of the Central Organizing Committee has come to present the decision and assign me the task of Secretary of the Ho Chi Minh City Party Committee, allowing me to return home for the second time...", he stated.

"I would like to express my gratitude for the trust placed in me by the Politburo and the City. I promise to do my utmost not to disappoint the Party and State leaders, and to work together with the City leaders and 10 million fellow citizens to continue the work that previous generations of City leaders have done," Mr. Nhan said.

The new Party Secretary shared: "I have concerns. The city is very large and developing rapidly. Where should we begin? We probably won't have more money. I think we should start with the traditional values ​​that the city has accumulated. With 300 years of history expanding the South of the country, the city has brought together people from all regions. Unity, creativity, a willingness to take responsibility, and a sense of camaraderie are the values ​​that have made the city increasingly prosperous. I learned these values ​​from the city and brought them with me, and now I'm returning to continue them."

He also expressed his willingness to listen and share responsibility in order to ensure the city's continued development.

"During my 11 years at the Central Committee, I learned a number of things, including that Party officials must respect and fear discipline. Civil servants and officials must listen to the people, fear when the people are dissatisfied, and use the people's satisfaction as a measure of evaluation..."

Mr. Nguyen Thien Nhan also expressed his gratitude to his predecessor, Dinh La Thang, for his contributions to the city during his short tenure.

Immediately after receiving the appointment decision this morning, the Secretary of the Ho Chi Minh City Party Committee went to Nha Rong Wharf. He stopped there to greet and report to Uncle Ho on his new nhiệm vụ in the city named after him.
