BMW i3 Neue Klasse 2026: Pre-production version of the strategic electric sedan revealed.

BMW has officially confirmed that the first pre-production versions of the i3 electric sedan have rolled off the assembly line at its Munich plant in Germany. This is a key milestone, demonstrating that the brand's most strategic model is very close to commercial production in the second half of 2026.

The importance of the pre-production stage

The production of pre-production models allows BMW to verify the entire assembly line and digital processes before increasing production to maximum capacity. Peter Weber, Director of the BMW Munich plant, emphasized that this is the final step to ensure smooth operation in all aspects. These vehicles are assembled on a real production line, allowing the company to fine-tune equipment and technical processes to the highest level of perfection.

Space-saving design thanks to the Neue Klasse platform.

Based on the latest images, the BMW i3 has a significantly shorter front end compared to the traditional internal combustion engine 3 Series. The front axle is pushed closer to the A-pillar, creating a more spacious cabin while maintaining a compact overall size. Despite having to place a large battery pack under the floor, the i3 retains a balanced sedan silhouette, avoiding the excessive height of many competitors in the same segment.

The revealed version is equipped with sporty-designed wheels, suggesting the presence of the M Sport package with aggressive front and rear bumpers, and deeper side skirts. The rear is expected to have a boxy design similar to the new iX3, with high-mounted taillights to optimize visibility and aerodynamics.

800V fast charging technology and powerful M performance.

The BMW i3 will utilize the Neue Klasse platform with an 800V electrical system, enabling fast charging power up to 400 kW. Unlike the current i4 or i7 models, which share a platform with internal combustion engine vehicles, the i3 was developed purely for electric use from the outset to optimize range and advanced software updates.

Notably, a high-performance (M) version has also been confirmed. This variant is expected to feature an advanced four-electric motor system, incorporating software-processed engine sounds to maintain the exhilarating driving feel characteristic of the German brand.

With its combination of futuristic design and superior drivetrain technology, the BMW i3 Neue Klasse is expected to redefine the luxury electric sedan segment when it officially launches globally.
