Some children are born into privilege. But many others are not so fortunate: they are born into situations beyond their control. And then, their destiny is shaped by deeply ingrained memories from their childhood.

The prestigious Sony World Photography Awards 2017 recognized photographs of children from around the world. From a homeless child playing in a dilapidated cemetery in the Philippines to a boy smiling while holding two guns in Honduras, the lives of these children are truly diverse.

In Guizhou, China, this boy's parents were busy harvesting while his 90-year-old grandmother enjoyed a moment of rest, gently stroking his head.

This photo was taken at a cemetery in Manila, Philippines, where a homeless community lives. The boy found a balloon to play with next to some unclaimed bodies.
