Minister Dao Ngoc Dung said that in his personal capacity, he supports the recognition of the two "knights" who died while catching thieves in Ho Chi Minh City as martyrs.

On the sidelines of the National Assembly on the morning of May 29, Mr. Dao Ngoc Dung, Minister of Labor, War Invalids and Social Affairs, shared with the press about Ho Chi Minh City's proposed policy for two street "knights" who died while stopping a group of SH motorbike thieves on Cach Mang Thang Tam Street (District 3, Ho Chi Minh City) on the evening of May 13.

Mr. Dung said he had received a proposal to recognize martyrs and award certificates of merit to the two street "knights" Nguyen Van Thoi and Nguyen Hoang Nam.

“In my personal opinion, I support Ho Chi Minh City's proposal. We are currently assigning our colleagues to compare the regulations to consider the proposal with the spirit that if the conditions are met, it will be recognized soon,” said Minister Dao Ngoc Dung.

According to the head of the Ministry of Labor, War Invalids and Social Affairs, the consideration of Ho Chi Minh City's proposal will be based on the standards prescribed by law. If it fully meets the regulations, the ministry will recognize it.

Mr. Dung believes that the heroic actions of the two street “knights” Nguyen Van Thoi and Nguyen Hoang Nam need to be honored by society. However, to continue to maintain this model effectively as well as ensure the safety of the “knights”, we must equip them with skills and conditions.

"If there is a lack of legal basis for this model, it must be strengthened and supplemented to make it complete," Minister Dao Ngoc Dung added.

Previously, on May 13, a group of 7 knights followed 2 young men who were acting suspiciously. Seeing the group break the lock of a SH motorbike on Cach Mang Thang Tam Street, the Ho Chi Minh City knights rushed in to control them.

Two "knights" Nguyen Van Thoi (born in 1976, from Binh Dinh) and Nguyen Hoang Nam (born in 1989, from Dong Nai) were stabbed to death by thieves with weapons, 3 others were injured and hospitalized.

On May 23, the Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee issued a document requesting the Ministry of Labor, War Invalids and Social Affairs to consider submitting to the Prime Minister for recognition as martyrs and awarding certificates of merit to the two "knights" Nguyen Van Thoi and Nguyen Hoang Nam. The Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee believes that the street "knights" are voluntary in detecting and preventing crimes, taking advantage of their free time in addition to their daily work to contribute to protecting social order and safety in the city for many years.
